      I let myself into Brad's empty apartment. I scheduled my classes on Friday, so I finished early. The plan was to study, so I spread my books out over his dining room table. But surrounded by his scent, his things, it was difficult to concentrate. Especially on a Friday. Especially when he would be home soon to touch me. Soon, soon, my heartbeat.

      My phone rang, and I pounced on it. My heart soared to hope the call was Brad saying he'd be home early.

      And crash! My heart dropped. My mom. The last person I wanted to hear from when I was hiding at my secret lover’s apartment. I sighed, then swiped to answer. As I waited for connection, I considered my excuses for not being home.

      I thought you finished early on Fridays? my mom said. The judgement was already present in her voice.

      I found a quiet spot to get some extra work done, since I'm going out tonight. It was true, I was doing those. Only she would imagine the library, not my boyfriend’s place.

      Are you coming home tonight? There was a stain of annoyance in my mom’s voice.

      My heart dropped. I hated omitting certain truths.
