From the moment I learned to read, I loved books. The emotions and thoughts of the characters in a book can be expressedso much better that it puts you in the mindframe of the characters.I am fascinated by angels and like to look at pictures of them as well ascollect figurines of them. I also collect dolls.I've always wanted to write, and finally decided to go after my dream. Those things that I love inspired me to write my first novel, The Descended.I am currently working on my fifth novel.

    Chapter Eight

Dovie was awakened by sunlight streaming through the drapes. She looked over and Sunny was still asleep. She got up and looked at the clock. It was 7:15. She hurried over to the cradle. The baby was sleeping. She went to the bathroom and put cold water on her face. Then she walked downstairs and got a bottle out of the refrigerator and warmed it on the stove in a small pan of water. She tested the formula on her wrist. It was warm, perfect for the baby to drink.

Dovie went back upstairs and took the baby out of the cradle. The baby’s eyes opened but she didn’t make a sound. She got a diaper and changed her. She picked up the baby and the bottle and went to the other spare bedroom and sat on the bed. She put the bottle in the baby’s mouth.

The baby looked into Dovie’s eyes as she suckled on the nipple. Her little fingers went up to the bottle like she was going to hold it. Dear sweet one, you are so beautiful! Such a miracle to behold! I have been so blessed to see you come into this world and to hold you! Dovie whispered to the baby. The baby’s eyes closed and her mouth let go of the nipple. Dovie picked her up to burp her. She let out a soft burp and Dovie got up and placed her back in her cradle.

She walked back downstairs. She started a fresh pot of coffee and let Purrley out. Purrley looked at Dovie’s porch and then at Dovie. Purrley is wondering why we are over here and not at home. She misses her spot on the porch railing. Go on, Purrley, go sit in your spot. You can come back here to me when you want. Dovie said to the cat. Purrley looked at Dovie as her tail thumped up and down. Dovie laughed and closed the front door. She heard the phone ringing in her pocket. She took it out. It said Eric calling on the phone display. She found the talk button and pushed it.

    Hi, Sunny! Eric said.

Hi, Eric, it’s Dovie. Sunny is still sleeping. Dovie said as her stomach knotted up.

I thought she was an early riser. Is she okay? Eric asked.

"Well, she was in a lot of pain last night so I had to have the doctor come over. She will be alright.

What did the doctor say was wrong?"

Dovie hesitated. "Ummm, just bad cramps. He gave her a sedative. I stayed overnight and kept an eye on her. She is sleeping soundly now. I just checked on her and she isn’t running a fever.

Thanks for taking care of her, Dovie. I knew she should have seen a doctor.

You’re welcome. When should you be back?

I’ve got the tiles loaded in the truck already. We are going to fill up the tank on the truck and hit the highway. I’d say we should make it back by 10:00 tonight. We found a faster route home, so hopefully sooner than that. Do you think it would be alright if I stopped by Sunny’s house when I get back tonight?

Of course. I’m sure she misses you. She’ll probably be weak, but I think seeing you will make her feel better. I’m going to stay with her until you come back.

Good. I feel better knowing you’re there for her. Hey, how’s Purrley’s eye doing? Any trouble catching her?

Purrley’s eye is getting much better, thank you. You should know it’s no trouble catching her." Dovie laughed.

"Okay, tell Sunny I love her. I’ll try calling this afternoon; maybe she’ll feel up to talking a bit. Good-bye.

    Good-bye, Eric. See you soon."

Dovie hit the end button. Fancy that, I figured out how to answer a cell phone! She laughed as she went to the kitchen to drink a cup of coffee.

She went back upstairs. She went into Sunny’s bedroom. Sunny was stirring. She walked over to her and looked at her. Sunny’s eyes were open. Hi, Sunny. How do you feel? Dovie asked as she sat next to Sunny on the bed and brushed Sunny’s hair away from her face.

Hi, Dovie. Ummm, what happened? Something happened last night, right? Sunny asked as she struggled to sit up.

There was a bad storm, Sunny. I heard you screaming so I came over here. You were in such pain. I called the doctor to come over right away. God please help me find the right words to tell her about the baby.

Sunny looked at the plastic bags covering her window. Did the storm do that? She asked as she pointed to the window.

Yes, Sunny. The storm was a bad one. Do you want to try to get up and take a bath? You were bleeding heavy last night so I put a pad on you, but the blood already got all over your nightgown. You might feel better taking a warm bath. Dovie said as she got up off the end of the bed.

Sunny pulled down the covers and looked at her nightgown. "Yes, that sounds like a good idea. My hair feels all sticky too.

You were sweating a lot from the pain. I’ll go start your bath water for you. Stay here and I’ll come and get you. I don’t want you to fall trying to walk. You’re still weak."

Sunny shook her head. Okay, Dovie. Thank you for coming to my rescue. I don’t remember much of it though. Sunny said as she brought her legs down from the bed to the floor.

Dovie walked to the bathroom and started the tub water. She poured some bubble bath in it. She took out the box of pads and put them on the vanity counter along with some fresh towels. She made sure the bath water was not too hot.

Dovie walked back to the bedroom and took Sunny’s hands in hers and helped her get up. They passed the cradle but Sunny didn’t notice the baby. Dovie took Sunny in the bathroom and helped her undress and get in the tub. She took the bloodied nightgown and panties. Do you want to keep these? Dovie asked Sunny.

No, they are pretty much ruined. Just throw them in the garbage. I have a lot of nightgowns and panties. I won’t miss them. Sunny laughed.

Okay. Do you need my help to wash up? Dovie asked.

"I’ll be alright. As long as those pains don’t come back. If I need you, I’ll holler. Can you do me a favor and go in my closet and get me a clean nightgown and clean panties out of the first drawer of my dresser?

No problem. I’ll go get them for you now."

Dovie walked to the bedroom and got the clean clothes. She stopped by the cradle. The baby was still sleeping. She went back to the bathroom and put the clean clothes on top of the vanity. "Sunny, I need to talk to you. When you get done with your bath, let’s go sit in the kitchen.

Is there something wrong?" Sunny asked.

"No, nothing is wrong. Just let me know when you get done. Where do you keep your clean bed sheets? I want to change them for you.

Okay. I will. The sheets are in my hallway closet, second shelf. Thanks, Dovie."

Dovie went to the closet and took out clean sheets and put them on Sunny’s bed. Her comforter didn’t have any blood on it when Dovie checked it. She finished making the bed when she heard Sunny calling her. She gathered up the dirty sheets and walked to the bathroom. Sunny was combing her hair in the mirror. I feel so much better today, Dovie. Taking a bath was good advice. She put down the brush and smiled at Dovie.

Do you want to keep these sheets? Dovie asked.

"If they aren’t bloodied that much, then I’ll keep them.

No, they aren’t bad. Most of the blood seemed to be on your nightgown. Where do you want me to put these?

You can throw them down the basement stairs. I’ll pick them up when I go to do a load of laundry."

They walked downstairs and Dovie opened the basement door and threw the sheets down the stairs. They walked to the kitchen. Sit down, Sunny, and I’ll get you a cup of coffee. She put the box of donuts on the table and opened it. "I hope you don’t mind that I ate a few of these.

Of course I don’t mind." Sunny said as Dovie got coffee for her and Sunny and sat down.

"What’s up, Dovie? Something seems to be on your mind. Is Purrley alright?

Purrley is doing fine. Her eye has cleared up a lot. Look, Sunny, what I have to tell you isn’t easy but it is nothing tragic. Those pains you were having weren’t caused by an oncoming menstrual cycle. You had a baby."

Sunny just stared at Dovie. She laughed. You’re kidding me, right?

Dovie took Sunny’s hand. "No, it is true.

I couldn’t have been. It doesn’t make sense.

You were, you just didn’t know it. It happens."

Sunny started crying. "Where is the baby then?

    She’s upstairs sleeping."

Sunny looked at her kitchen counter and noticed the cans of formula on it.

The doorbell rang. Dovie got up and went to answer it. It was Doc Henderson. She let him in.

    How is she? He asked.

She is in the kitchen. I just told her.

They walked into the kitchen. Sunny sat staring into space, silent tears running down her cheeks.

Sunny, Doctor Henderson is here to see you. He delivered your baby last night.

Sunny’s eyes turned to the doctor. He put his medical bag down on the table. Hi, Sunny. I know this has got to be quite a shock for you. But there are women who have babies that never knew they were pregnant. You gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She is perfect and healthy. I need to check your heartbeat and blood pressure.

He took out his stethoscope and listened to Sunny’s heart and took her blood pressure. Your vitals are all good. How is the bleeding?

Sunny looked down. "My bleeding is normal.

    Any cramps?

    No, none at all.

Good. You’ll have to pick out a name to give me for your baby for the birth certificate. Just let me know it. Do you want me to give you a sedative?

No. I just need time right now. I just feel numb." Sunny said softly as the tears kept falling.

"I understand completely. I have been in this situation before. Do you have any questions?

    No.

Okay. If you do, then Dovie can call me. I gave some sedative pills to Dovie for you to take if you need to calm down."

He picked up his bag and went with Dovie to the door. "She is fine physically. She is just going through some emotional trauma. Call me if you need me. I’ll check her tomorrow. See if you can get a name for the baby.

    Thank you, doctor." Dovie said.

Take care, Dovie. Doc Henderson said as he walked out the door.

Dovie walked back to the kitchen and put her hands on Sunny’s shoulders. Sunny, God blessed you with a beautiful baby girl. I know you’ll love and accept her.

The baby started crying. That’s her. I’m going to get her and bring her to you, Sunny. Dovie said as she walked to the stairs.

I can’t see her now, Dovie. I just can’t. Sunny cried.

    "Do you want a sedative?

Yes. I can’t deal with this right now."

Dovie found the bottle of sedatives and gave one to Sunny. I’m going to get the baby, Sunny. Why don’t you come upstairs and lay down in the extra spare room. The baby is in your room right now. Dovie took Sunny by the hand and took her to the spare bedroom. She put Sunny to bed and closed the door.

Dovie went to get the baby. The baby was still crying, her little fists going back and forth across her gums. Oh, you are so hungry little one. Let’s get you a bottle. Dovie said as she picked up the baby and grabbed a couple of diapers to take downstairs.

She warmed the bottle and went into the front room to sit on the soft big chair. The baby eagerly sucked on the nipple as she looked at Dovie. She drank the formula and fell asleep. Dovie took her to the couch and changed her diaper. She wrapped the receiving blanket around the baby and put her on the couch. She should be okay on the couch. I’ll put some of these couch pillows around her.

She heard the doorbell ring. Who could that be? She wondered as she walked to the door and opened it. It was Sheila. "Hi! Is Sunny home? I’m her friend, Sheila. I was driving past when I noticed her broken window and I just wanted to make sure she is alright.

I’m Dovie, Sunny’s neighbor next door. Come in, Sheila. Sunny is resting now. She had a bad time last night." Dovie said as she took Sheila into the kitchen.

What happened? Sheila asked as she sat down by the table.

"She had a baby. She didn’t know she was pregnant.

Oh my God. I heard of that happening to people. She has got to be in shock. That’s probably why she was cramping so bad. She was probably in labor.

    Yes, she was.

Poor Sunny. I know she is seeing Eric at the home improvement store. Does he know?

No, he still isn’t back from his trip. He called earlier today. I just told him the doctor came to see her last night. That she was now resting in the spare bedroom. He will be here tonight and I will tell him then.

How do you think he’ll take the news?

I think he will accept it. He loves Sunny. I think he’ll be in shock over it though. I mean nobody knew or would have thought she was.

Yeah. What did she have?" Sheila asked.

"A girl. A beautiful baby girl. Would you like to see her?

Can I? I would love to!" Sheila exclaimed as she got up.

Follow me. I put her on the couch. I just fed and changed her.

They walked in the front room. Sheila peeked at the little sleeping baby. "Oh my, what a little doll she is! So the doctor came to the house last night during that big storm?

Yes, thank God he did. He checked out Sunny and the baby. He came again this morning. Everything is fine.

You’ve got to be tired, Dovie. Do you want to get some sleep and I’ll watch the baby? I watch my sister’s baby a lot so I have experience. Just show me where the bottles and diapers are. I can stay until 9:30 tonight. I will wake you up before I leave if you are still sleeping.

That is very kind of you, Sheila. I guess I am pretty tired. The diapers are on the kitchen counter and bottles are in the refrigerator. Make sure you warm the milk before giving it to the baby. There is a pan of water on the stove to put the bottle in. Test the milk on your wrist to make sure it is lukewarm. The baby gets up for a bottle around every four hours. I will be in Sunny’s bedroom. Please wake me up if you need anything.

Get some rest now. I’m just going to stay in the front room and watch TV and the baby.

    Thank you.

    You’re welcome."

Dovie headed up the stairs. She kept Sunny’s cell phone next to her on the nightstand. It did not take long for her to fall asleep.

Dovie woke up to the sound of Sunny’s cell phone. She reached over and grabbed it. It was Eric. "Hello.

Hi, Dovie. It’s Eric. How’s Sunny doing?

    She is still resting.

Ummm, okay then don’t wake her. We are making great time. I should be there within the hour.

Okay, Eric. I will leave Sunny’s front door unlocked for you.

    Great. Thanks, Dovie.

You’re welcome. See you soon. Good-bye.

    Good-bye, Dovie."

Dovie quickly got up and looked at the clock. It was 9:15 already. Boy did I sleep a long time. I better go check on Sunny and the baby.

Dovie turned on the hallway light and went into the spare bedroom. She looked at Sunny. She was sleeping. Dovie could see the light rhythm of Sunny’s chest going up and down with every breath she took. Dovie quietly closed the door and turned off the hallway light. She went downstairs to the front room.

Sheila looked up when Dovie walked in. Sheila was holding the baby and watching TV. "Hi, Dovie! Did you get some rest?

Yes, dear, plenty of it. I was knocked out almost instantly. I hope I can fall back to sleep tonight. How is the baby doing?

Oh, she is such a good baby. She has the most beautiful eye color I’ve ever seen. She likes to watch me while she drinks her bottle. She is just a bundle of love. I couldn’t put her down. I only did when I had to use the bathroom or get something to eat and drink. You can count on me to help watch her. It would be a pleasure." Sheila said excitedly.

Dovie smiled. "Well, you’re sure a Godsend with your help.

Hey, let me give you my phone number. Call me and I’ll come help with the baby. My sisters can work at the cafe, it’s no problem." Sheila said as she got up and laid the baby gently back on the couch. She took a pen and paper out of her purse and wrote her phone number on it and passed it to Dovie.

"Thank you so much. I think Sunny will be alright soon. I’m just giving her time to rest up.

Yeah, she’ll fall in love with her baby. I can’t see how she couldn’t." Sheila said as she walked to the front door.

Dovie gave her a hug. "Thank you again, Sheila.

You are so very welcome, Dovie. I am glad to have met you.

I’m glad to have met you too, Sheila."

Sheila walked out the door. Dovie went back to the kitchen and poured herself a cup of coffee and went to the front room to watch TV.

A half hour later she heard the front door open. Sunny? Dovie? It was Eric’s voice.

Dovie got off the chair and walked to meet Eric. "Come in the kitchen, Eric. I need to talk to you.

I see you have storm damage, is everything okay?" Eric asked.

"Sit down. Do you want something to drink?

No, I’m fine thank you. Where’s Sunny?

She’s sleeping upstairs in the spare bedroom.

Look, I didn’t want to tell you this when you called because you were on the road.

Oh my God, what happened?" Eric asked as his face turned white.

"Nothing tragic, Eric. The cramps that Sunny was having weren’t caused by her menstrual cycle coming on. She was pregnant and gave birth last night.

She was pregnant? She didn’t look pregnant.

She didn’t know she was pregnant. That does happen to women sometimes. They go into labor not knowing there is a baby coming.

    Is the baby full-term?

Yes. She had to have been pregnant months ago.

Are they both alright ….Sunny and the baby?

Yes. Sunny is trying to comprehend what happened so she has been sedated. The doctor came last night and delivered the baby. He checked out both Sunny and the baby and they are both fine."

Just then the baby started crying. That’s the baby. Come with me, Eric. Dovie said as she got up from her chair and Eric followed.

Dovie went to the couch and picked up the baby. She showed her to Eric. She is so perfect, isn’t she? Dovie asked.

Eric looked at the baby. "Yes, she is.

Let’s go into the kitchen. I have to warm her a bottle."

They went in the kitchen. Dovie warmed the bottle and walked over to where Eric was sitting. Would you like to feed her? Dovie asked.

I’m afraid I’ll drop her. She is so little. Eric said as he looked at Dovie.

Nonsense. Hold out your arms and I will put her in them.

Eric held out his arms and Dovie placed the baby in his arms. She moved Eric’s arms a bit. Here is the bottle. Feed her.

Eric stuck the bottle in the baby’s mouth. She instantly sucked on the nipple and opened her eyes and looked at Eric. She is so beautiful. Has Sunny seen her at all? Eric asked.

No. She said she is not ready to yet. I will give her time. She should feel better tomorrow. I’ll try then.

The baby still stared at Eric. She brought up her hand and grasped his little finger. He smiled. Wow, a baby. A beautiful baby. I love her already!

Dovie smiled. I knew you would, Eric. I know Sunny will too. She is such a good baby. Such an angel. I need Sunny to name her.

The baby finished her bottle and closed her eyes. Dovie went by Eric and explained to him how to hold her up to his shoulder to burp her. He did and the baby gave out a little burp. Eric could smell the formula on the baby’s breath.

Okay, let’s take her to the couch and change her. Dovie said. Eric got up with the baby in his arms and carried her to the couch. Here’s a diaper. Unwrap her blanket and take off her diaper. The side tabs of the diaper will release it from her.

Eric followed Dovie’s instructions and put a new diaper on the baby. Dovie showed him how to wrap the blanket around the baby. There, now you’re a pro at it. Dovie chuckled. "Not too hard to do, huh? The bottles are in the refrigerator. You need to warm the bottle before you feed it to her. There is a pan of water on the stove. You put the bottle in the pan of water to heat. It does not take long. Test the milk on your wrist, make sure it’s lukewarm and not hot.

Can I go up and see Sunny?" Eric asked.

You can stay with her if she wants you too. I will sleep in Sunny’s room tonight with the baby. Sunny’s friend Sheila came over earlier and watched the baby while I got some sleep, so I am good to watch the little one tonight. As a matter of fact, I think I’ll go upstairs now. Carry the baby for me.

They went into Sunny’s room. Put the baby in this cradle, Eric. He gently put the baby in the cradle and bent down and kissed her on her head. Good night little one. I love you. Good night Dovie, I love you too. Eric said as he closed the door behind him and walked to the bathroom to wash up.

He walked into the spare bedroom when he was finished. Sunny was sleeping on her side. Eric walked over to the bed and took off his shirt and pants and got in under the covers. He put his arms around Sunny and pushed her hair away from her neck and kissed it. It’s Eric, Sunny. He whispered quietly in her ear. I’m here. I love you. Everything is going to be alright.

Sunny stirred, she was trembling slightly. Eric pressed his body close against her back, holding her to him.

    Chapter Nine

Eric sat up in bed disoriented for a moment. Filtered early morning sunlight came through the drapes. He didn’t recognize the room he was in until he seen Sunny lying next to him. The storm. Sunny trying to comprehend giving birth to a baby she never knew she was pregnant with. He thought. He turned to look at Sunny. She was on her side, not facing him. He watched her, making sure she was breathing. She was. He lay back down and moved her hair away from her neck as he kissed it. I love you, Sunny. I love our baby. Please, Sunny. Please snap out of it. I need you. Our baby needs you. Please accept this. You are my one and only true love.

Sunny could hear Eric and felt his light kisses on her neck. Did he just say our baby? Our baby. A tear built up and poured down her cheek. Please dear God help me. Help me to understand and accept what has happened.

Eric got out of bed and put on his pants. He went to the bathroom and splashed cold water on his face. I better not forget to call Steve at the store and let him know I won’t be coming in today, possibly a lot longer.

He went downstairs. Dovie was already up; she was sitting at the kitchen table feeding the baby. Good morning, Dovie. He said as he bent down and kissed the top of the baby’s head. He gently rubbed her wispy hair. He smiled at her. And good morning to you too, sweet pea.

Dovie smiled. "Good morning, Eric. Did you sleep well?

"Yes, pretty much so, and you?

Yes. The baby only woke me up once. She drank her bottle and promptly fell back to sleep. She is such a good baby. Pour yourself a cup of coffee, dear."

Eric poured himself a cup. He brought the pot over by Dovie. Would you like some more? He asked her.

    Yes please. Thank you.

Eric filled Dovie’s cup and poured the small amount left down the drain and started another pot. Purrley was meowing and rubbing herself against Dovie’s leg. "Eric, can you let out Purrley for me?

Sure. Come on, Purrley, come on." Eric said as he slapped his leg and
