Awake

Wake up, Sweetness! Don’t do this to me. Jackie said. My heart is hurting; you’ve been in a coma for a month and a half. A coma? I thought. But I can hear everyone. So, I was half-awake, I guess we’ll call it. Only hiccup was the difficulty in waking up. Hearing his voice made me happy and yet, sad at the same time. I couldn’t wrap my arms around him to feel his hugs, smell, or kiss those juicy lips.

The door opened and I heard Annie’s voice, my father, and my friends: Lisa, Mary, and Kayla, as they walked in the hospital. I couldn’t believe it. I was fighting to wake up from the coma. My dad kissed me on my forehead. The girls hugged me, not caring if I was a vegetable or not. My heart was jumping with joy. I wanted to hug my girls. The happiness in my heart was hard to contain, that my heart was beating fast.

Annie called the doctor as she wondered what was happening to me. When the doctor walked in, he asked my friends to leave the room. Lisa screamed, Susanita blue, you better wake your ass up! She refused to leave the room. The doctor asked her again to leave. Lisa looked at the doctor and said, Wait… She walked over to me as I lay in bed and says, "Susie remember we’re a team and we’re incomplete without you. We are sisters in blue! Now try to wake up and complete us.

Those words moved me that I could feel my heartbeat in my throat. My eyes opened. I couldn’t talk because I was still too weak. It surprised everyone in the room to see me awake. My dad rushed to my bedside asking the doctor if I was all right? The doctor examined me and concluded that I was so happy to hear my friend’s voices and that was what woke me up. My dad asked, How is it possible that my daughter was asleep for a month and a half? The doctor answered, Mr. Leng, your daughter lost a lot of blood during the operation. We also noticed that when she got shot, she hit her head hard on the ground when she fell. There’s nothing serious in terms of her head injuries. So, it was the fall that caused her to be in this state.

Annie asked, Internal bleeding?

The doctor said, Nothing serious. She got hurt on the head, but it wasn’t serious. Please don’t worry.

Jackie responded, Don’t tell us not to worry, she’s been out for a month and a half.

Sometimes it’s hard to explain certain things. This case needed a miracle, and now you’ve got one. Susie’s awake. The doctor said. They all crowded around my bed. The doctor asked Can you hear me? I nodded, Yes. He asked them to leave the room and started to examine me.

I said in a weak, quiet voice, Im hungry. The doctor didn’t examine me much at all. He asked me a lot of questions. It seems that my case confused the entire hospital staff. My wounds were healed, but I could still feel the pain from inside.

The food at the hospital wasn’t good at all. My father bought me crab soup, which was tasty. And that same evening, they discharged me from the hospital. I missed home. It was a wonderful feeling to be back home, and my girls were with me. When we arrived home, I officially introduced Jackie to my dad and friends as my fiancé . My father couldn’t hide his joy. I knew he would agree. As long as I wasn’t with Darren. Before the incident happened, my father actually thought Darren was different, but he was right about him all long.

As we sat in the dining room, I looked at my friends and asked, So what made you girls come to China? My father answered instead, Susie, when I heard this crazy boy (Darren) shot you, I brought in lawyers. I glared at my dad. He asked, What’s the problem Susie?

Dad remember when I was kidnapped? What did the police do to Mrs. Lee? Darren shot me and no one dared to arrest him, but they allowed him out on bail. This family owns half of China. We must deal with this matter another way. Jackie opened his eyes again and asked, What do you mean? Susie, these people hire mafia members to get their dirty work done. What can we do? Jackie sounded afraid. Now I’m a little too weak to decide, so let’s enjoy the rest of this evening. But Annie couldn’t contain herself any longer, and said, Susie, Mrs. Lee and Darren came to the hospital when you couldn’t wake up. She told Darren that she would help him get you back. She also knows about my pregnancy.

What my aunt was saying didn’t surprise my. So, I asked, Was Jackie at the hospital when they came? He said, Yes, I was there. What did you answer Mrs. Lee when you heard those words? I asked. Jackie responded, I said nothing. Arguing with an insane person is worthless. I kept my cool with Jackie because I could feel the lava of anger rising in me.

Jackie couldn’t answer that old hog? I thought. Seems like Mrs. Lee and her so-called son have teamed up against Jackie and Annie. Mrs. Lee wants Annie and Darren to go after Jackie. I wonder how they will handle her. Annie being the quiet one and Jackie the patient turtle.

I asked, Aunt Annie, why are you telling me about this issue? I don’t care about them.

Annie answered, Susie, I need your help to deal with Mrs. Lee.

Aunt, what do you expect me to do? Look at the state of me? That fool almost killed me. I want to stay away from this family.

Annie yelled, Yeah! But Mrs. Lee wants to destroy your engagement with Jackie. What will you do?

Let her try. We will deal with this Mrs. Lee the African manner. Lisa said.

Jackie asked, What do you mean by the African manner? I cut the conversation short by telling them I wanted to sleep. Lisa had the same personality as me, loud and argumentative. Mary and Kayla were the well-behaved girls. They always listened before talking. In any group of friends, you’ll find unique pairings of personalities. That’s how I perceive us to be. I was so glad my girls were with me.

That night I couldn’t sleep. The scene from the airport played out my mind. The girls slept in my bedroom. Although, Annie had a huge guest-room, they preferred to sleep with me. I woke up to get a glass of water. When I looked at the time, it was 3 a.m. I didn’t turn on the lights because I didn’t want to wake anyone up. I stayed in the kitchen drinking my water in the dark. After a few seconds I heard, Hello Susie. I didn’t move. That voice sounded so familiar to me. When I turned, it was Darren. He said, I know I’m out of order, but I needed to see you. Screaming was out of the question. Panicking wasn’t a great idea either, and getting angry wouldn’t change anything. So, I remained calm, I didn’t want to wake anyone. I searched for words. But nothing came to mind. That’s not the scenario I had pictured if I saw Darren. He grabbed a chair and sat next to me. He said, Don’t give me a hard time. I came here to talk. I stood to turn on the light. Darren followed me around the kitchen. My mind was blank, I had no words. There was nothing to tell him. He grabbed my hand and said, Can we talk, please? I took a deep breath and said,

Get out! We have nothing to talk about. Darren replied, No, I’m not leaving. In case you forgot. I will remind you again. I love you more than you can imagine. Susie, I’ll never give up on us. The situation with my mother left me confused, and I didn’t know what to do. To make matters worse, I confused you and left with no explanation. Darren put me to sit on the chair as he kneels, caressing and kissing my scar. I didn’t stop him. I missed his touch, but I kept that a secret. He then said, You went to Paris and returned engaged to Jackie. How did you expect me to feel? The day I shot you, I almost killed myself. My target was Jackie, but you got in the way. Susie, my heart tells me you still love me. I know you do. Just know this, I will never lose you to Jackie or to anyone. You don’t have to say anything. I said what needs to be said.

Then, Annie woke up and found me in the kitchen talking to Darren. She asked, What are you doing here and who let you in? Darren handed her the spare key she had given him. He said, Annie, I know you’re angry at me, but please, can we talk? My aunt didn’t want to hear anything Darren had to say. He teamed up with his mother, and Annie wasn’t having any of that. Then, Darren said, I didn’t tell my mother about your pregnancy. She came to get confirmation from me. My dad told her. He asked her for a divorce. Annie replied, I didn’t ask you to justify yourself. Darren answers, I want to make things clear. Annie then asked, Why did you shoot my niece? Why did you want to kill her? You always told me how much you loved her and yet you wanted to destroy her. Darren replies, Correction Annie. That bullet was meant for Jackie. I made it clear several times to everyone that Susie belongs to me. I chimed in and said, Stop it Darren. Get out of this house. I’m making things clear now. We’re done! Meaning we’re over! It seems like you’re having a hard time understanding. I’m with Jackie now. Accept it.

Darren yelled, I will never give up on you! No matter what you say. That yell woke up my friends and dad. My father almost strangled Darren. Annie stopped him. My father said to Darren, Stay away from my daughter. I will protect her with my life, now get out before I destroy you. Darren walked toward the door, then he stopped, looked back at me saying, My heart belongs to you. I’ll never accept you and Jackie together. I’ll do everything I can to destroy your relationship with him. You are mine. Then he walked out. Darren behaved as if nothing had happened between us. Nothing. He was smooth, cool and charming again, saying all the right things. It was incredible. He must have nerves of metal. I told myself. But then, I
