Jessica knew today would be a challenge. As a stable girl, she was required to begin her work early and on the days prior to a big race that meant a 5.0 am start. It was already 5.30 and she had barely made any progress.

Motivation was needed and it came in the form of a rare cigarette, after which she promised herself she would buckle down and get on with it. Jessica leaned against the door of the stable where Cider Gal, the Squire’s most promising horse waited for her last canter prior to the afternoon race meeting.

Even the idyllic setting of the stables adjacent to the Manor House looked depressing this morning in the damp, overcast sky. Jessica’s four-hour sleep after a rough night did nothing to raise her spirits as she took another drag of her cigarette and relived the disaster of the previous evening.

Jessica’s preferred drinking establishment was The Thatcher, a country pub in the village she had never left since childhood. It was the only place for miles that wasn’t frequented by old men, although there wasn’t exactly a high population of eligible bachelors in their early twenties to match her own age group. But a night out with the girls was always welcome and yesterday evening was a celebration to welcome Heather, the new Estate Manager’s secretary who had just completed her first week at the Cider Orchard.
