    CHAPTER 1

Unstoppable Courage: Handle Fear and Turn Upsets into Opportunities

    THE PURPOSE OF CHAPTER 1:

The purpose of this chapter is to help you recognize and handle fear and upset. You will get a tool for dealing with intense emotional experiences. You will know it is working when you are aware of fear and can use it as fuel for growth. That is the essence of courage.

FEAR – Dream Killer or Door Opener?

If you can face your deepest fears and not shrink back, then you do not need this book. You are a demigod. But even Hercules or Achilles had bouts of massive fear.

Let’s face it. Fear is not going anywhere. Call it the shadow, energy, or fuel. Call it working with core issues. Call it removing emotional resistance or getting your game face on. We mere mortals need tools to work with fear in its many forms.

You are going to learn to differentiate your experience of fear into three distinct categories. Then, you can more skillfully and productively work with fear. As a consequence of learning how to work with fear, you will gain the ability to more skillfully manage other intense emotions such as anger, resentment, frustration, etc.

Courage is not the absence of fear; it is wise action in the presence of fear.

    The Three Faces of Fear

Face number one is fear as the energy to do your best.

Face number two is fear as wisdom to save your butt.

Face number three is fear as psychological goo that stops you in tar pits of funk. This is also known as irrational fear or as core issues.

This chapter will touch on these three faces and then outline a process you can use to handle the most difficult form of fear, face number three. In the process, you will become more connected to yourself and freer to live the life you want.

Courage, from the Old French root word, cour, literally means to take heart. When cultivating courage, you will feel fear in your body, your heart may ache, and belly may have butterflies. The choice that matters is what you do about it. If you are not feeling fear, you are in denial or you are not taking the risks necessary for growth.

As my Toastmasters mentor Tom Traynor says of fear and public speaking, you won’t ever lose your butterflies, but you can get them to fly in formation!

Face Number One: The Energy To Do Your Best

More often than not, the solution to fear is action. That is why the familiar phrase still rings so true. Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.

Personally, I’ve never seen this lesson more clearly taught than in a 72-Day Wilderness Leadership Training program at the
