    Boston, 1895

Erin tugged at her shirtwaist, willing it to fit. Its high collar itched but she refused to scratch for fear that it would leave red marks on her neck. She walked carefully toward the library entrance thinking that at any moment she would trip over the slightly too long brown skirt. The matching jacket was discretely taken in as her petite figure was the exact opposite of the woman it was borrowed from. Every stitch of clothing was a hand me down, but it would have to do. Its arched windows with deep silk green drapery and the embossed ceiling reminded her of pictures she’d seen of a Roman basilica. Erin stared at the site, not knowing whether to pray or kneel.

Miss? Excuse me. Miss? You are in the way, a deep melodic voice spoke behind her.

Startled, Erin spun around to see Jacob Ward. With breath-taking blue eyes hidden behind small round glasses, his brown hair flopped lazily across his forehead. He cut an aristocratic figure in his fashionable gray sack coat with matching waistcoat. Even his mustache and small pointed beard lent a majestic look about him. She unconsciously patted her blazing red hair back into place as she noticed his strong hands with long fingers wrapped around a case of books.

    Miss?

Oh, yes, sir. I’m sorry, sir. May I help you? Her lilting Irish accent gave him pause as she bounced in and out of a little curtsey.

No. Just move. He motioned with his head for her to step aside.

Erin stepped back only to trip on her skirts and fall straight back on to a stack of books. Her head bearing the brunt of the fall, the books tipped over and scattered everywhere.

Oh hell. Jacob dumped his case on the floor and bent over Erin as she rubbed her head. Are you all right? He
