    Sidney stood at the cash register at attention with a smile plastered across her face. She could think of a dozen things she wished she could be doing right at this moment; one of them would be going to the Katy Perry concert tonight. She was a tall lanky girl but she wasn’t awkward. She looked very mature for her age and carried herself with a quiet elegance. She had long slender hands that her mother always called piano hands but much to her mother’s disappointment, she was tone deaf and couldn’t carry a tune for the life of her.

    Her high cheekbones and cat-like green eyes were accentuated by full rosebud lips. Her straight auburn hair was usually pulled tightly into a bun at work. Her skin was pale but had a rosy glow. Her boss Angelo always called her Rosa instead of by her real name.

    Angelo owned the Sicilian Deli. He was a short stocky Italian man and often joked with her. He loved having her around the deli. She was always happy greeting customers and filling orders and never gave him any trouble.

    If only she didn’t have to smile all day to customers she thought. It hurt her cheeks.

    A customer came up to the counter and placed his order. His eyes focused on the locket around her neck.

    He looked a bit disheveled and very old. Dearie, he said with a lilt in his voice. He must have been about eighty years old Sidney mused.

    Where did you get that locket? He said eying her shrewdly.
