    Brief History

    Modern soccer has its origins in the streets of medieval England. Neighboring towns would play each other in games involving an unlimited number of players on opposing teams who would clash en masse, struggling to drag a pig’s bladder by any means possible to markers at either end of town. Two sports evolved from this melee, rugby and soccer.

    In the 16th century, public schools are credited with establishing the modern soccer codes and creating teams. The Football Association was created in 1863 with 11 teams drafting the first 13 laws of the sport. In the intervening years, soccer has become wildly popular worldwide, with over 240 million people from more than 200 countries regularly playing the game.

    Soccer made its official Olympic debut at the 1900 Paris Games. With the exception of the 1932 Los Angeles Games, soccer has been on the schedule at every Olympic Games. Women’s soccer was introduced to the Olympics at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
