The 14-club maximum

Some equipment regulations can be quite complex to follow, but this month, Chris Wallace, Rules manager at The R&A, looks at one of the easier-to-understand equipment Rules – how many clubs you are entitled to use during a round.

The limit is made clear in Rule 4.1b, which states that you must not start a round with more than 14 clubs or have more than 14 clubs during the round. Famously, Ian Woosnam found himself on the wrong side of this Rule while tied for the lead in the final round of the 2001 Open Championship, but more recently, and in slightly more bizarre circumstances, LPGA player Rachel Rohanna found herself in a similar situation during play of the Copper Rock Championship on the Symetra Tour.
