Buddy Hannah

I started writing my books about the Cherokee Indians in late 2005 for something to occupy my time. I enjoy writing my books because it helps me to relax my mind and allows me to escape the reality of life for a short time. In 2010 I decided to take my writing to the next level and start my own publishing efforts. Finally in May of 2012 I was able to publish the first ebook version of my first book through Smashwords.com. Its a great feeling being a published author. Smashwords.com made that possible. The print version of the first book will be available soon. I'm a 58 year old disabled veterian who will be a successful author in the very near future. All I want to do is spend the rest of my life making my readers happy with my great fiction books about the Cherokee Indians.

I wish to dedicate this novel to a very special lady. Since the day she was born she has been my bear-bear. You will always be my daughter. I love you Valerie.

    Chapter One

The Cherokee Nations Wolf Clan has finally met the yoneg (white man), or at least a small group of them. The question is have they come only to trade for furs, or take the traditions and ways of life from the Ani yunwi ya (Cherokee people) of the Cherokee Nations Wolf Clan.

The three children of Running Elk and Atja (Speckled Trout) grew up as very happy children. They always played well together and with other children of their village. The children were loved by all who came to know them.

Chief Hawiya Awohali (Eagle Bear), being the chief of the Cherokee Nations Wolf Clan, called an emergency meeting of the Cherokee Nations Wolf Clan Tribal Chief’s Council to discuss the yoneg (white man). The meeting was in two suns (two days). Chief Eagle Bear was worried about what to do about the yoneg. Every since he returned from the Anigilohi (Twister Clan, one of the seven Clans of the Cherokee Nations) he has been worried about what to do about his problem with the yoneg wanting to open a trade agreement between the yoneg and the Ani yunwi ya (Cherokee people).

It was early in the morning when Hawiya Awohali (Eagle Bear) went for his early walk with his soquil (horse) named Painted Eagle. He enjoyed his time with Painted Eagle. He could talk to the soquil (horse) and not worry about back talk. Eagle Bear and Painted Eagle had a special bond, one which binds their souls together.

On this day Eagle Bear wanted to share his thoughts with Painted Eagle. As they were walking north up the stream, just outside the village, Eagle Bear said Well my old unali (friend), we have a large problem in front of us.

Painted Eagle nodded his head as if he understood everything Eagle Bear was saying.

Eagle Bear continued saying The white man has come into our lands. It is said the white men are like the stars in the night sky, too many to count. This is what Mr. Red of the yoneg said to me when I ask him how many white men live in the east. Are all the white men like these who have come already? How many more will come wanting to trade? Can we trust the others as they come? Will they want our lands as well as furs? So many questions and not enough answers.

Suddenly Eagle Bears personal guards, which were Cherokee Death Warriors, stepped out saying You’re getting harder to keep up with. Silver Wolf will have our hides if he finds out you dodged us again.

Eagle Bear said to the guards with a grin on his face I’m sorry my friends, I’ll try harder not to dodge you from now on. Eagle Bear and his guards returned to the village.

The time arrived for the Cherokee Nations Wolf Clan Tribal Chief’s Council Meeting. Chief Eagle Bear was eager to talk to the chief’s of the different villages of the Wolf Clan to get more feedback than what he got from Painted Eagle. He was hoping Chief Light Foot was going to attend the meeting. At least Chief Light Foot has met the white man many winters ago. Hopefully, if he doesn’t come, he will brief his son Chief Yellow Cloud about what he knows about them.

Chief Two Crows (Kog-Kog), Eagle Bear’s little brother and the chief of the Unami people, came in early for the meeting of the Tribal Chief’s Council. He wanted to visit with his brother before the meeting. Eagle Bear was always happy to see his little brother. As Two Crows wrestled with Eagle Right Claw and Eagle Left Claw, the twin sons of Eagle Bear, in the center of their lodge floor, he said to Eagle Bear Well big brother, I see you have been feeding these boys really good. One day they will be as big as their father. Then how will the Wolf Clan ever feed all of you?

They laughed but Little Bee said Now you have got the boys all worked up. You two will have to take them out to burn off the excess energy. Go, both of you, and take the twins. Bring them back when they are ready to take a nap. Eagle Bear picked up Eagle Right Claw and Two Crows picked up Eagle Left Claw and they left the lodge.

The four walked towards Painted Eagles holding area. The boys enjoyed watching the soquil’s and Painted Eagle liked them as well. The twins played while Eagle Bear and Two Crows watched them.

Two Crows looked Eagle Bear in the eyes saying My brother, have you been worried about the white man as much as I have?

Eagle Bear looked straight into Two Crows eyes saying Every since we met the white man I have been concerned about the future of the Wolf Clan. I sometimes feel the Indian, as we are called by the white man, are about to enter a time of hardship and destruction. I hope I’m wrong and there is nothing to worry about.

Two Crows noticed the twins were getting tired so he said I think we can take the boys home now, just in time to get ready for the meeting. They carried the twin’s home and laid them down for they were already sleeping.

As Chief Eagle Bear and Chief Two Crows (Kog-Kog) approached the Ceremonial Lodge Chief Eagle Bear turned to Silver Wolf saying I need you to attend the meeting my friend. Silver Wolf looked at Eagle Bear and Two Crows, his boyhood friends, and nodded okay.

Chief Eagle Bear had Dlayhga (Blue Jay), the yellow man (Chinese), living with the Wolf Clan people; bring all the special knives he made for the warriors who attended the hand-to-hand combat training at the Unami village. Nodu (Black Jack), the Cherokee Death Warrior, who was Blue Jay’s assistant, helped deliver the knives to the Ceremonial Lodge.

As the three warriors entered the Ceremonial Lodge everyone stood up and greeted them with a loud cheer. Once they reached the center of the room Chief Eagle Bear gave the signal for everyone to sit down and be silent.

Chief Eagle Bear began the meeting by saying The first thing on the agenda is to recognize the brave warriors who completed the first ever training conducted at the Unami village. Chief Eagle Bear had Blue Jay enter with the special knives and stand behind him.

Chief Eagle Bear continued Our newest member to the Wolf Clan is the Master Knife Maker, Blue Jay. He has constructed a very special knife for each person who was a student of the first class. We will be conducting another class soon. As I call the warriors name he will come into the Ceremonial Lodge and receive his knife from the two Cherokee Death Warriors who assisted me in conducting the training. Chief Two Crows and Silver Wolf please stand here beside me.

Chief Eagle Bear started calling for the warriors. Each warrior was given a special knife made from the long knives of the Asquani (Spaniards) into short knives like the famous one of Chief Eagle Bear.

When the last warrior received his special knife Chief Ohlagao of the Quapaw people stood next to Blue Jay saying very loudly We the chief’s of the Wolf Clan and Allied Chief’s along with the famous Master Knife Maker, Dlayhga (Blue Jay) have a special presentation to make. I’ve been asked to give the presentation and do so proudly. Chief Eagle Bear, the greatest Cherokee Death Warrior since Chief Kanati (the first man, the great hunter and the first chief of the Cherokee Nations Wolf Clan) has made everyone here proud to know him. He showed his mighty leadership during the war with the Tunica Nation and the fight with the Asquani (Spaniards). Blue Jay has constructed a knife like none ever made. It’s made from the rocks of the Black Mountains. It cannot be broken and never needs to be sharpened. Chief Ohlagao reached behind himself to receive the knife and handed it to Chief Eagle Bear. He continued saying We give this knife to you from our hearts. The crowd cheered loudly as Chief Eagle Bear took the knife.

Chief Eagle Bear thanked everyone for the knife and looked over at Blue Jay saying Blue Jay is truly a master when it comes to making our knives. I’m proud to have him as a personal friend. Not only do my sons love being around him but I’m learning many things from him as well. I thank everyone again from my heart. Now it’s time to continue this meeting. If my friend Blue Jay and his assistant Nodu would be kind enough as leave us we will get started.

Blue Jay and Nodu stepped out of the Ceremonial Lodge and were greeted by a very large cheer from the students and Cherokee Death Warriors who were assistant trainers who all received a special knife made by him.

Chief Eagle Bear looked around the large room saying My brothers of the Wolf Clan, each of you should know already why you are here. The white man has come into our lands. The white man says he only wants to trade his things for furs of the little one with the flat tail who swims in our streams, buffalo hides, deer hides and bear hides. My question to you, my brothers is, do you think as I in they may want more? Please stand and tell everyone here your feelings about the white man.

Chief Nowata of the Chickasaw people stood saying to the others I was not there to see the white man but my warriors told me many things. I do know I don’t want their fire water in my villages. Besides, we are many suns ride from the Catawha people. Maybe the white man will not come into my valley. Chief Nowata sat back down to let someone else say something.

Chief Four Fingers of the Chickamauga people stood saying Like the Chickasaw people the Chickamauga people are further west from the white man. The Chickasaw people along with the Chickamauga people are close to the Great Muddy River. Maybe the rest of the Cherokee Nations Wolf Clan should move to share our lands and let the white man hunt and kill their own furs. Chief Four Fingers sat back down next to Chief Nowata.

Chief Little Rock of the Catawha people stood next saying I have seen firsthand what the white man’s fire water can do to you. I was sick for many suns after drinking it as were my warriors who drank it. We will always abide by Chief Eagle Bears ruling to never drink it again. We of the Catawha people found these white men to be honest and meant no better by giving us the fire water. We would like to try and work with the white men and live in peace with them as much as we can. Chief Little Rock lowered his head and sat down.

Chief Eagle Bear stood up saying The white men of Mr. Red’s are much different from the Asquani (Spaniards) we killed in the Anigilohi (Twister Clan, one of the seven Clans of the Cherokee Nations) lands. I’m curious as to how much different they will be in the long run.

Chief Two Crows, of the Unami people, stood up to say I think we need to take a few moments and regroup.

Chief Eagle Bear said to the group Good idea. Let those who want have a smoke go ahead and share the pipe. I will be back soon and we will continue this meeting. During this time think about what you want to do about the white man’s trade agreement. Chief Eagle Bear, Chief Two Crows and Silver Wolf left the Ceremonial Lodge.

Moments later Chief Eagle Bear and the others returned to the Ceremonial Lodge to continue the meeting. Chief Eagle Bear was standing in the center of the room saying I think maybe we should go and talk to the white man together as a group. But then again we can’t do this because we will be putting the leaders of the Wolf Clan in danger. We would be showing our strength to the white man as well. Maybe we should ask for only a few villages to trade with the white man for the first winter just to see how it goes.

Chief Yellow Cloud of the Monacan people stood up saying Chief Eagle Bear is very wise in his actions with the white man. Before coming here my father, Light Foot, told me a little about the white men he met when he was a boy. The white man called himself a Mountain Man. They lived in the high mountains most of the time. They only come down once every spring to trade their furs to other white men. My father said what he remembered was the Mountain Man was very ugly and dirty. They never were a danger to our people. Now maybe these new white men were the ones trading with the Mountain Men and now want to trade with the Wolf Clan. I feel the same as Chief Eagle Bear; we should only allow a few villages to volunteer to trade with the white man for twelve full moons to see what happens. Chief Yellow Cloud sat back down.

Chief Eagle Bear asked Does the Mountain Man still live in the high mountains north of the Monacan people?

Chief Yellow Cloud looked at Chief Eagle Bear saying In my lifetime I have never seen one but then again not many warriors go into the high mountains. In the winter the snow is too deep and any other time you have to worry about the wolves and killer bears.

Chief Eagle Bear, staring around the room, said Do we have anyone here who wishes to volunteer to trade with the white man for one winter’s time? After one winter we will look at this again at another Tribal Chief’s Council Meeting and reconsider the trade agreement. Let the volunteers be known by standing to be seen.

Chief Little Rock of the Catawha people stood up first. Two other chief’s of smaller villages stood up. Chief Eagle Bear looked at each of them saying We will allow the white man to trade with each of your villages for twelve full moons. Then we will meet back here again to talk about further trade. I need the three chief’s to meet me at the Catawha village of Chief Little Rock ten full moons from now to talk with the white man. I would like to have Chief Ohlagao of the Quapaw people, Chief Yellow Cloud of the Monacan people and Chief Two Crows of the Unami people to be there as well with twenty five warriors each. I would feel better having a powerful force close by if they are needed. The rules I put into effect the day I talked with the white man stay in effect during this testing period. Along with the seventy five warriors from the three villages we will take seventy five Cherokee Death Warriors. We should have no problems with this small force of warriors.

Chief Eagle Bear continued saying to the chief’s of the Wolf Clan The most important rule to remember is the one about the fire water. No member of the Wolf Clan is to ever drink the white man’s fire water. If he does he will be made to walk the gauntlet and the white man who gave him the fire water will be put to death very slowly in the ‘Pain World’.

Chief Eagle Bear continued saying Let the Great Spirit ride with everyone as they return to their homes and wado (thank you) for coming. The white man is here so we need to be prepared.

Chief Eagle Bear, looking around, said Now if everyone here will be patient with me for a little longer we can depart. Silver Wolf would you please leave us and wait for me outside?

Silver Wolf looking at his chief said Sure and left the Ceremonial Lodge.

Chief Eagle Bear waited for Silver Wolf to leave and said to the chief’s around the room I have a request to make of the chief’s of the Wolf Clan. As most of you know I have been away often conducting business for the Wolf Clan. At the same time I have been neglecting my responsibilities here at home with my people. Our families are growing at a very fast rate. To solve this problem I’d like to create a new village name and pick Silver Wolf as their first chief. The village here is called the Cherokee Death Warriors village. Well, since the village has over one hundred fifty warriors plus their families they should have their own chief and leader who can be there most of the time. I think we should call this village the Nacoochee because our forefathers have been calling it this for hundreds of winters now. Let’s make it official and call it for all times Nacoochee. What I need is the Tribal Chief’s Council blessing and support.

Chief Ohlagao stood to say I’m sure I speak for the other chief’s here when I say ‘What took you so long?’ We have talked about this for many winters among ourselves. Yes my great chief you have our support.

Chief Eagle Bear smiled at Chief Ohlagao saying If you each favor my selection of Silver Wolf then return here in two moons to join me in the ceremony to welcome Silver Wolf as a new chief of the Cherokee Nations Wolf Clan village of Nacoochee. Now the meeting is over and wado (thank you) my brothers for your support. Chief Eagle Bear walked out of the Ceremonial Lodge and stood next to Silver Wolf as the other chief’s came out.

When Chief Yellow Cloud walked by, Chief Eagle Bear said to him Chief Yellow Cloud, can I talk to you for a moment?

Chief Yellow Cloud walked up to his chief saying Where would you like to talk my friend?

Chief Eagle Bear said "Let’s take a walk
