About the Author
Sin Tax
A shovel: that's what he needed.
Jefferson started out with a scythe, clearing away browning tobacco stalks until he had enough bare land to work with. He moved on to a post-hole digger, but the soil wouldn't cooperate -- granular, slippery, it trickled between the scooping blades before he could shift any appreciable amount aside.
If that's how it was going to behave, he'd have no choice but to fetch the shovel.
Back aching, he tramped his way out of the field, the rest of the tobacco plants still and noiseless under the bloated moon. They waited: rotation was coming soon, and they'd sleep, ploughed under and buried beneath the earth they'd nearly sucked dry of nutrients. The trellises would come up, grapevines snarled amongst them, and in time the soil would be replenished
