The swinging crystal slowed, slowed, stopped. Lazlo peered over his pince-nez at the drowsing woman in front of him, and then ventured to speak:
Miriam? Miriam, can you hear me?
Yes...Doctor...
she mumbled.
Lazlo fumbled the crystal pendant in his excitement, dropping it on the table. Just a test or two further, and he could begin.
Miriam, dear, can you tell me what year it is?
It is...the year of Our Lord Eighteen Hundred Forty.
