About this ebook

Case #1: From the Case Files of the Hudson Agency.

Private Eye, Carl Danby tries to stay out of the limelight. Ever since the detective injured his knee on the job, the big boss himself has hinted at Danby’s retirement.

Then the Agency is hired by successful Chicago businessman, Benjamin Porter, who has recently been involved in a series of life-threatening accidents. Convinced he’s being targeted for death, Porter points the finger at someone close to him as the culprit.

Danby is assigned the new case. Saddled with the Agency’s newest recruit, Elmo Clark, the veteran detective delves into the situation. It’s up to Danby to investigate the murder attempts and figure out what’s going on before the next accident proves fatal.

THE HUDSON AGENCY - CHICAGO STYLE

The big boss himself, Paul Winstone III, walks into my office late one Tuesday afternoon. I watch him settle into the client chair and regard me with steely brown eyes. An uncomfortable silence descends. Childishly, I’m delighted that he cracks first.

I have a job for you, Gramps.

No, we’re not related in any manner. Everybody at the agency calls the old relic – me – Gramps. Well, I call him The Turd. Nothing like a little healthy disrespect.

Ever since I blew out my knee chasing a crook, the big boss pretty much ignores me. And whoever falls out of favor with Paul Winstone III better look out. He never comes out and says it, but the past few months Winstone has delicately danced around the subject of my retirement. He won’t fire me because our Chicago agency is just one branch of an international outfit and the guy who runs the whole shebang hired me. I nod.

Wanda will fill you in on the details in the morning.

Wanda Gibbons is Winstone’s secretary. Oops, sorry – administrative assistant. Okay. I’m itching to leave the office, but he
