The clock ticked. He was well aware of this, for his desk was placed below the maddening, mind-splitting incessant ticking. Colin looked up at the thing with bloodshot eyes. He figured he would get used to the persistent timepiece three years ago when he was first assigned this desk. Time was not his friend. He took the damned sound home with him. Went so far as removing all the batteries from his own clocks, just to find peace, some solitude. The only clock he had was a digital that had no tick, no sound at all. No sound at all. But yet he woke with the ticking in his ears every night. His upper lip curled slightly as he stared at this bane.

Staring at the clock won't get your work done, Scard. Colin, jolted back into reality, turned to look at his supervisor. Bastard, what did he know about getting anything done but the new receptionist?

Sorry, sir, Colin blurted, and turned back to his work.
