In the dream leads are attached to my body -- my breasts, my feet, my mouth, my ears, my sex, my fingertips, my navel. When the first one disconnects, I am mildly horrified, understanding that as they go, so do my feelings. As they fall away from my body, the horror fades and is replaced by numbness. When the final one, in the middle of my forehead -- my sacred third eye -- drops away slowly, I feel a tiny twinge of regret. The view pulls back and I see myself hanging limply in gray mist. Distantly I know that I must find a way to reconnect them or I will fade into the mist. Help, I try to scream; only a whisper comes out. I am terrified thinking no one will hear my tiny cry.

The alarm rang and I rolled over as I do every morning, shut it off, got out of bed to make coffee and breakfast. I was still making a whole pot. Angrily, I scooped out the extra grounds and got a ladle to remove six cups of water out of the reservoir. I turned it on and went out for the newspaper.

I laid it on the table.
