It’s warmer than usual, the acne-scarred young desk clerk volunteered.

It’s wet, Gayle snapped irritably. And so are we. We should have been picked up at the airport. We waited an hour for the car.

I’ll look into it, he promised.

He turned to his computer. Name?

The clerk stared at his computer for a minute, then smiled. Yes. You’re in room 616. I’ll have the porter bring up your bags.

Don’t bother. We’re traveling light. I presume the elevator is working.

Claire shifted uncomfortably. This trip to Glasgow was shaping up to be an unmitigated disaster. The flight from London had been delayed for forty-five minutes and the subsequent turmoil had left her boss in an extremely foul mood.
