Chapter 1: You want me to go where?
Hiren was a typical teenage boy. He loved sports and playing video games. He wasn’t really in love with school, so June was always his favorite month. Today had been his last day of school and he was ready to celebrate. Summer vacation was his favorite time of year and right now he was looking forward to three months filled with fun. Schools out for summer!
he sang as he tore through the front door of his house.
He was a happy boy most of the time. He had faced some tough challenges early in his life. The family moved to the United States when Hiren was only six years old, and didn’t even speak English. They came from India. It was scary at first. Everything was so different. It was hard to make friends; in fact, some kids were kind of mean to him. Luckily he had a great teacher who decided to teach the class a little bit about India. In fact, she asked every kid where their family was from originally. Some kids were like Hiren, they came to America as small children. Some kids were born in America, but their parents were from different countries. Some kids had American parents, but their grandparents came from a different country. She found out everyone’s background and then once a week she had a special lunch and presentation to learn about that country. Most of the kids never even realized what a big world they lived in.
After that, Hiren started making friends and adjusting to his new life. He was very bright and was an excellent student. As he grew older, he became very popular. He was captain of the soccer team, he enjoyed sports and he loved to listen to music and hang out with his friends.
He also picked up some bad habits. Instead of going to temple, he preferred watching TV, hanging out with his friends and playing games on the computer. He didn’t want to eat Indian food; he wanted to eat from McDonalds. He would only speak English, even though his parents spoke in their home language, Hindi.
He ran through to the house, almost tripping over his little brother, as he rushed to his bedroom to change clothes. Hi Mom, the guys are planning a soccer game at Joey’s house and we’re staying for pizza afterwards, okay?
His mother smiled and shook her head, So do you have time for a snack? Maybe you could spare a moment to tell your mother about your last day at school.
She smoothed her silky black hair and adjusted her pony tail. She looked like a teenager herself in her denim shorts and pink polo shirt. I’ve got to go, the guys are waiting!
Hiren rushed out of his bedroom sporting blue jeans and a t-shirt.
Hiren didn’t like being treated like a baby. He also didn’t like his parents kept things from him. He felt like they were keeping some kind of secret. They acted like he was too young to understand certain things. That annoyed him; he was not some clueless little kid. He started to become disrespectful to his parents. He was bitter about being forced to follow old Indian traditions. After all, he was an American now.
Just as he ran towards the front door, an arm shot out and stopped him in his tracks.
You will leave for India next week.
Hiren spun around in confusion and found his father’s stormy eyes looking right at him. His father looked tired but determined. What are you talking about, Dad? I’ve got plans for the summer!
Hiren’s father stayed firm, obviously trying to control his temper. He was not happy with his son's attitude lately. The boy was starting to question some of the traditions and rituals that were part of their Hindu culture. However,
