    CHAPTER 1

    Tick..., tick..., tick.....

    Every tick just one second, only one second, but to Barnaby they felt more like a week.

    It was the last few minutes of the history lesson, but the waiting was killing Barnaby. It was like Christmas Eve and not being able to get to sleep. Barnaby's arms and legs were fizzing with excitement. How much longer would he have to wait?

    The minute hand clicked round one more place.

    Expecting the bell to sound, Barnaby nearly stood up out of his chair. Oh the agony. Barnaby had started to sweat. This was torture. He'd never known anything like it.

    Mr Johnson had stopped talking, although Barnaby hadn't heard anything for the last ten minutes or so.

    'Okay everyone,' Mr Johnson said. 'Please read to the end of the chapter and we'll finish off on Monday week.'

    Mr Johnson's sentence was timed to perfection. As he finished saying the words Monday week, the school bell rang.

    'Have a good holiday everyone.' Mr Johnson said.

    Barnaby quickly put all his things into his satchel and did up the straps. Usually Barnaby was very tidy putting his things away, but not today.

    CHAPTER 2

    It was a lovely warm summer afternoon as Barnaby rushed from the main entrance. The cool air of the old school building was soon replaced by the dry heat of outside. It reminded Barnaby of his Easter holiday to the Algarve, stepping from the plane and being hit by an invisible curtain of hot air. He grew a lot that holiday. 'It was growing on that holiday that had made this day possible,' Barnaby thought as he ran out of the school gate.

    Barnaby only lived a short distance from the school. He had been walking himself there since the start of the summer term. There were
