    Chapter 1 - The Farmers’ Market

    Scout and Benne Wafer were a bit sleepy the next day, which was a Saturday. The night before had been eventful. They always enjoyed a good party and The Impromptu Tulip Mania Party was the event of the season.

    So the two Springer Spaniels plodded down the stairs with Dad to make coffee, have a cookie and check out the back yard. Nothing appeared amiss so they went back inside to find out what the day held for them. Chisolm the Possum was out of sight and napping for the day and the squirrels were probably still asleep. They usually made a clamorous racket, scampering about, on the metal roof of the house.

    Dad was gathering shopping tote bags and that usually meant one thing. They were headed to the Farmers’ Market in Marion Square. Scout hopped up and down excitedly and was told to stop hopping up and down like a pogo stick.

    Benne Wafer, still a puppy, asked Scout, Why are you so excited? What are we doing?

    This was Benne’s first year so he had not been to the Farmers’ Market yet.

    Scout explained, It’s a wonderful place full of food, people and other dogs. And it’s a long walk so we get to smell a lot of things on the way.

    Benne was excited now too. He loved meeting new people and dogs. Plus, walking anywhere near King Street always meant lots of food in the gutters and on the sidewalks: bagels, pizza, chicken bones. Their friend Chisolm always raved about the city, calling it a cornucopia of good food and fortune.

    Dad clipped Benne and Scout into their harnesses,
