This is an excellent work of historical fiction. It provides the reader with a perspective of how merciless were the leaders of the French Revolution. Their hatred for the aristocracy corrupted them as deeply as the people they claimed to be bringing to justice. As Americans it is difficult to grasp how the layered classes of European society remained intact for so long, but they did. Clearly the noble class assumed their privileges of wealth and the under classes did what they could to make their lives satisfactory. The story moves along at a good pace with Henty’s typical development of the young male protagonist’s noble character. The resolution to the story’s plot is satisfying but I should not disclose it to potential readers. In times like the 2020s in the USA, I think young men need this kind of encouragement to pursue strength of character, virtue, and courage.
