Despite her self-perceived independence and maturity, Agnes lives an isolated life that is full of oppressive rules and strictures. Though she is constantly surrounded by people, she has to sacrifice close supportive familial and romantic relationships in her pursuit of her career. The events in the novel have close ties to Anne Brontë’s real experiences as a governess, and it has been suggested that this semi-autobiographical narrative opened readers’ eyes to the unfair and restrictive lives of 19th century governesses. A realistically humanizing story told in beautifully simple prose, Agnes Grey is a delightful Brontë novel that is not to be overlooked.

She is the author of Villette, The Professor, several collections of poetry, and Jane Eyre, one of English literature's most beloved classics. She died in 1855.

This is only a note on performances. Thank God I had access to different audio books with other performers to hear WH and JE (wonderful Amanda Root for the latter). To listen to S. Coombes read A. Gray is to listen to a television announcer who didn't understand the words on the page. Her intonation sounds literally like that of a synthesized voice on a little recording heads cleaning device I had 30 years ago. Maybe Sarah Coombes is AI. I cannot understand how a human being would be hired to do what she did.
