In the starting chapter I understand Krista giving up. In the story, she is 53. At 50 (now 62) after my 17-year marriage ended, I said the same thing and have stuck to being self-partnered since then.

Glad the group of friends and lovers all had long lives. Only unbelievable part is that most of the kids grew to also live alternative lifestyles.

The ending actually had my eyes watering up.
