About this audiobook

“Combines the gritty toughmindedness of the best coaches with the gentle-but-insistent inspiration of the most effective spiritual advisers” (Fast Company).

This groundbreaking New York Times bestseller has helped hundreds of thousands of people at work and at home balance stress and recovery and sustain high performance despite crushing workloads and 24/7 demands on their time.

We live in digital time. Our pace is rushed, rapid-fire, and relentless. Facing crushing workloads, we try to cram as much as possible into every day. We're wired up, but we're melting down. Time management is no longer a viable solution. As bestselling authors Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz demonstrate in this groundbreaking book, managing energy, not time, is the key to enduring high performance as well as to health, happiness, and life balance. The Power of Full Engagement is a highly practical, scientifically based approach to managing your energy more skillfully both on and off the job by laying out the key training principles and provides a powerful, step-by-step program that will help you to:

* Mobilize four key sources of energy
* Balance energy expenditure with intermittent energy renewal
* Expand capacity in the same systematic way that elite athletes do
* Create highly specific, positive energy management rituals to make lasting changes

Above all, this book provides a life-changing road map to becoming more fully engaged on and off the job, meaning physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused, and spiritually aligned.

Instead of just saying people need to create new healthy habits, Loehr and Schwartz give ample evidence for why people dissatisfied with the way their lives are now should and how they can make new habits to improve their quality of life. According to the authors, the reason people generally don't make the life changing improvements that we want to make is that we really have little mental stamina for constant decision-making. Willpower just doesn't do it.We are creatures of habit who take the path of least resistance when we are overwhelmed (which is often). The way to make sure that we can function at our best mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually is to tie the behavior you want to create to a core value in your life. Then systematically work to make it a habit. Once it is a habit, you won't have to force yourself to do it during times of high stress or busyness. The other major theme in the book is that people are out of balance because we don't monitor our stress and recovery times. We tend to work, work, work and rest whenever we have a chance. Our spirit, mental capacity and emotional intelligence operate the same way as our bodies. In order to create a greater flexibility in any of those categories, you have to use the "muscle" and then let it rest (recover). Humans are not designed to go, go, go without breaks. We are rhythmic beings. The book includes a website to take the free assessment and begin your own analysis so that you can create your own personal development plan. The ideas presented make a lot of sense and made me feel better about the changes that I've tried to make that haven't stuck, yet. I now have the tools to make those improvements. Will definitely be putting these actions steps to use!

Definitely thought provoking, and it convinced me to sign up for a photography class I've wanted to take.

Nicely paced read that keeps pulling you in with thoughtful truths. Really like their take on things laid out simply in the back of the book. The rest of the book puts flesh on the concepts with practical examples. There seemed, to me, too many examples but many resonated with me. I think this makes for a good reference book, you can get cheaply since it is 10 years old. However, the truths have enduring relevance. It makes sense to watch you energy maybe more than your time. Particularly like the sprint and recovery concept. Some things about eating, not so sure that is scientifically up to date.

It was ok, however most of it was pretty useless. There were only a few real insights.

An excellent read about going with the cycles or rhythms of life. Time is not the substrate to be managed, but energy. A full engagement is called for with the four realms of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The resting part of the cycle should be equally celebrated. Feeling guilty during rest and relaxation wastes energy!

Highly recommended. Without having known of this fully, I've been quoting from it for years. The language and structure are a little too much like a workbook for my tastes but the ideas, recommendations and practices are sound and compelling and will appeal to many over-stressed folks. Those most skeptical of the softer psycho-spiritual works will be impressed.

Not much new here. And very much geared toward workaholic executives who have the option to make their own schedules.
