About this audiobook

Everyone is not as they seem in this fantasy novel, replete with war, witchcraft and secrets.

As evening falls, the city of Esteburg begins to stir. Christophor Morden, one of the king's special inspectorate, is woken early by a call to the city prison. A heinous crime has been committed and the police suspect supernatural causes.

The investigation will take Christophor far from home, to a village on the edge of the Kingdom. There he will discover the signs of an unholy ritual that can only be performed by a witch.

But within Christophor – as within all the citizens of Reikova – is a day brother: Alexsander, a musician who knows nothing of night. And as his night brother nears the truth, Alexsander will find himself determined to halt him.

And all the while, the witch's ancient and apocalyptic ritual comes ever closer to completion...

Couldn't finish it. There are some interesting ideas here, but it's quite a mishmash -- and the closer it got to the ending, the more it seemed to be everything but the kitchen sink.
I couldn't muster sympathy or liking for any of the characters.
Also, it should be noted right up front that this is more horror than fantasy, with a heavy dose of cruelty. Do not listen while eating.
Irritating grammatical over-correction (insistence on using "and I" where it should have been "and me" -- seemed like the only places the author (or editor) allowed "me" to stand were where the correct choice was "I"). This is minor and all too common, but it kept throwing me off and making me have to rewind.
The narrator is so emphatic that it feels like he's beating you over the head. Always seemed too loud even when turned down.
