- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great narration made it easy to absorb the content. Tick
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Insightful. This enneagram book is meatier than some others and just what I needed to grow.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I read this book over six weeks, as part of a Tuesday night class through Artisan Church.
This is my second deep-dive into the Enneagram, after reading The Road Back To You in 2017.
This is a solid book to start with after you've gained some familiarity with the Enneagram. It goes deep - I still have not wrapped my head around the Harmony Triads. The book provides practical ways to engage with your type through contemplative prayer practice that I found interesting. The author presumes you have full buy-in throughout the book. He's an engaging author and weaves the right amount of personal story into it without being overbearing.
A helpful and practical guide to engaging the Enneagram. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A thorough and helpful introduction to the Enneagram in all of its dimensions. The author walks a person through the concept of the Enneagram: the different types, how they manifest themselves, their tendencies, their "intelligence centers," their challenges, and the kind of prayer and meditation practices they would need. There's a lot here, but the author does a great job of slowly walking a person through all there is to offer. It's a great introductory work to that end; the end has some suggested prayer techniques (centering, examen, body), and one of the appendices contrasts the different types to avoid mistyping. The work is certainly not the end of the story on the Enneagram; it works best to open horizons so one can explore and learn more. Yet as that guide it proves extremely useful. Highly recommended.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Ehhhh.....2.75 rounded to 3 stars because the author has deeply self-studied the Enneagram and applied it to spirituality. BUT.I picked up this book because coincidentally and around the same time, I did the Enneagram at my work and also with my church. Basically, I was hoping this book would give me a Biblical perspective on Enneagram insight and application - especially how to understand and use the Enneagram to better love and lead others. The Enneagram is a secular, social science tool, so finding a book that provides spiritual application and Christian perspective is both uncommon and interesting. Unfortunately, this was not the book I was hoping it would be.The Sacred Enneagram takes a "contemplative spirituality" approach--it looks at the Enneagram as a sort of map to understand the soul and therefore, how your soul/Enneagram type can best find its way back to God. Some scriptures is cited, and so too is Thomas Moore, Neal Donald Walsch, and even Eckhart Tolle. This is spiritual enlightenment more philosophically in line with The Shack than a Bible-based view. It's a dense read because it is, after all, the Enneagram through a pan-spiritual world philosophy. I was looking more for a Proverbs-like, very practical guide to the Enneagram - understanding and application - from a Biblical/Christian perspective. If the latter is more in line with what you're after, keep looking.
