About this audiobook

Madeleine Becker's parents died when she was ten years old. Ripped from her home and everything that she has ever loved, she is forced to start all over again. The only way for her to move on is to build walls around her heart and keep everyone at a safe distance. Her logic: she can't get hurt if she doesn't fall in love.

That theory is blown to pieces when she meets Reid Connely during her freshman year at college. He is gorgeous and darkly mysterious. He understands Maddy's pain all too well, but sharing his pain would mean breaking down the walls he put up around his own heart. Conflicted between loving Maddy and hiding his dark past, Reid starts to reevaluate his world. Maddy's inner strength, snarky personality, and breathtaking beauty help Reid to make peace with his past.Contains mature themes.

Just a quick review for this one. I enjoyed it. Listened to the audio for it (which is why it took me so long to finish). Not a bad reading, though at times the narration may have influenced my opinions of some scenes.

I like how Collins let the book end and I'll be looking forward to continuing the series.

I can't deny that I liked this book. So, with that being said, you are probably wondering why I gave this a 3.5 star review. Well, you have to remember with me, that isn't a low rating. I RARELY give books 5 stars. My ratings usually fall between three and four stars when I like a book. It takes A LOT to get that 5 star rating from me!
So onward I go.... This book tugged at my heart in quite a few places. The loneliness inside that Madeleine carried is enough to torture anyone's soul. Her not knowing how to let herself go and just be is heart breaking. So when someone challenges her soul, there is only one thing to do.... Brace yourself for more heart break?
Heart break is what Reid is ready to give from the word go.... Well, he doesn't intend on it, but it happens. Then the torture the two endure once it happens.... Two tortured souls unwilling to let love in equals a story that is sure to bring about emotions all of the way around.
Now to get to the rating, there is a reason for it. Although I liked this book, it had its moments. Its moments where it lost me and my mind went elsewhere. Melissa is a good author, however, there are parts where she reels you in, your heart starts to swell, and then she just shifts away leaving you lost and unfocused. At least that's where I was. It was almost like she was afraid to deliver that final blow of emotion you are begging for to happen.
Is this book worth reading? Yes. Will you regret reading it? Absolutely not.
