About this audiobook

Animal Farm, one of the great social satires of our century, is based upon modern Eastern European history. First published in 1945, it is the classic fable of the utopian dream and the corruptive influences of power. When the animals at Manor Farm revolt against their master, Mr. Jones, their goal is to take over the farm and establish an ideal community based on hard work, honesty, and the equality of all animals. Guided by the memory of Old Major's utopian vision and the seven commandments, Animal Farm, as the animals have renamed it, briefly fulfills the ideal. Memories are short, however, and soon-through manipulation and aggression by those who assume power-the farm's founding principles are slowly eroded and abolished. Decades after its debut, Animal Farm is still a relevant and powerful tale of how blind allegiance to political leaders leads to ruin.

Author

George Orwell

George Orwell (1903–1950), the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, was an English novelist, essayist, and critic. He was born in India and educated at Eton. After service with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, he returned to Europe to earn his living by writing. An author and journalist, Orwell was one of the most prominent and influential figures in twentieth-century literature. His unique political allegory Animal Farm was published in 1945, and it was this novel, together with the dystopia of 1984 (1949), which brought him worldwide fame.

I loved this book!!! The political and sociological analysis accomplished through this social satire is timeless and ironically honest. Animal farm explores how, through sensationalization and fanaticism, the fragility of democracy and political transition presents the opportunity to amass power, allowing totalitarianism to rise under the pretense of communist ideologies (which is fairly indicative of the historical context of the book). Overall, Animal Farm is a very short read which reaches depths of sociology and politics that will forever brandish this novel as a classic and literary masterpiece.

76 years later, this story is every bit as true and poignant as when the ink was still fresh on the page.

Of course the book is great and a classic, but beyond that the narrator was phenomenal. Brought the story to life so well that it seemed more audio drama than simple reading. Highly recommend, very timely as well.

An old classic first read at college the same year (1966?) as Huxley’s Brave New World, today (2023) listened with that deliciously intoned voice of a professional reader, and at the time of Trump , of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and other dictators of all colours, has a warning message worth repeating!
