What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a great book, with relatable characters and a realistic portrayal of breakups and friendships. The story deals with difficult times and social media shaming in an admirable way. While some readers didn't like certain aspects, overall it is still a good read. The interpretation is wonderful, although some find the story to be boring.

For me, it's a story that it's OK, because of the way it goes. But I like how Jenny Han writes and how I indentifies myself in Lara Jean.

“Love can go away, or people can.”

Josh and Genevieve as they were in book 1 are a thing of the past in the second novel, as Peter and Lara Jean continue to explore their relationship together.

In this novel Lara Jean & Peter deal with some difficult times [read: social media shaming] that many teens most likely have experienced, and Lara Jean deals with it in a pretty admirable way.

Peter has many mistakes in this one...many that really frustrated me as a reader. [read: Gen isn’t totally gone]

And then there is John. The last of Lara Jean’s love letters makes its way back to her, in such a unique way.

Lara Jean befriends a woman, Stormy, at a retirement village where LJ volunteers, and she gives LJ some of the BEST advice! And perhaps causes some ripples, and really solidifies what LJ wants in her life.

    Worth continuing the series!

In this sequel to "To All the Boys I've Loved Before," Lara Jean is back - still a hopeless romantic, but also a bit more grown up. Lara Jean is struggling with the ramifications of her relationship with Peter, including a viral Instagram post that leads to a great deal of humiliation (oh the joys of high school). As she and Peter learn to navigate a "real" relationship, she also finds herself writing John Ambrose McClaren-- one of the original boys who received a love letter in Book #1. Suddenly, Lara Jean is even more confused. Is it possible to love more than one boy? Is Peter still in love with his old girlfriend (and Lara Jean's ex-friend)? How exactly does one navigate the ins and outs of love and high school?

I actually found myself enjoying this book more than the first. Perhaps I'd just become more accustomed to Lara Jean and her style, but this was a really sweet and enjoyable novel. Lara Jean comes into her own in the sequel, as she negotiates high school and all the romantic woes she encounters along the way. The second book also avoids a few of the "icks" I felt from the first (e.g., crushing on her older sister's boyfriend). You become a little more used to some of Lara Jean's idioms, and she really does grow up a bit -- taking care of her sitter, Kitty (still a spitfire and a great character all in her own), looking out for her dad, and coming out of her own world a bit.

Even better, the plot is unpredictable and keeps you guessing. Both boys seem viable options for Lara Jean, and she truly comes out of her shell and lives a little, while still remaining true to her self (key). The book presents a great family dynamic with Lara Jean's dad, a single guy raising his three girls, and the supporting cast of characters (especially Kitty) are fun and well-developed. Overall, I read this one in about 24 hours and found it quite entertaining and delightful. A great presentation of high school life and certainly a worthy sequel.

So much better than Netflix’s version! Much more dramatic in true Lara Jean fashion! I still don’t like how the reader does Peter’s voice (it makes him sound so conceited and makes me really not like him) but it’s still a great book!

Lara Jean and Peter are truly dating, but she is unsure of his true feelings for her. When a video is posted with them kissing, many rumors begin circulating about them. Peter's ex-girlfriend, Genevieve, continues to do things to pull Peter's attention to her. Lara Jean begins working at a nursing home, and befriends Stormy. This job brings an old crush, John Ambrose McClaren, back into her life. Things come to a head after Peter, John, Gen, and Lara Jean participate in a game.
Sweet ending to this story of young love.

At New Year's, Lara Jean writes a love letter to her fake boyfriend Peter and waits to see how he'll respond. Meanwhile, an old crush for her middle-school days ends up back in her life, and Lara Jean starts wondering if she still has feelings for him.

This book picks up right after where the last book ended, without really any recap at all. So, it definitely cannot be read without reading the first book beforehand. It was nice to revisit the rich world of the characters in Lara Jean's life, including her sisters, father, neighbors, classmates, etc. There were also a few loose threads from the previous book that were picked up here and resolved satisfactorily (e.g., the heart necklace that Lara Jean's father said was sold out when he went to buy it for her at Christmastime).

That being said, this book simply wasn't as enjoyable as the previous one because it shows more and more how low the bar is for boyfriends. Peter does maybe one or two nice things at most and spends an inordinate amount of time with his ex-girlfriend (while being jealous of any other guy who talks to Lara Jean, even at times when they are not dating), and this is pooh-poohed away with the lamest excuse of how his ex-girlfriend is "going through some things." Lara Jean is far more forgiving of both of them than I think most real-life people would be (or at least than I would be).

The introduction of another guy for Lara Jean to potentially fall for felt a little cheap, like how every young adult title published around this time felt the need to have a love triangle (although frankly that could have already been accomplished with Peter's bending to every whim of his ex-girlfriend's). And here it just served as a mirror to how much Peter and Lara Jean don't really belong together but somehow that is "end game" for these characters.

Having gotten this far, I'll continue with the last book in the series but I can see why a lot of people seemed to stop after this one. Frankly, the conclusion of the first book had been subtle and just open-ended enough that I think the story would have been perfect to stop there.

I feel like this book had to exist with how the previous one ends, but I'm not sure how I feel about the end of this one. Lara Jean's insecurities and the fights between her and Peter got a little stale after a bit, and I was cheering for John Ambrose. I'm not mad at the ending, but maybe a little dissatisfied. Maybe the third one will fix that for me.

I didn't like this as much as the first one. The narrator was still great and there was still some good humor. I swear at the end of the first book Genevieve told Lara Jean why they weren't friends anymore and from the start of this book Lara Jean seemed clueless about it. There were other inconsistencies that niggled at me but still...the romance. I see why the girls love this book.

After sitting on this for a while (with some apologies to my local library), I finally binged in a nighttime 'just before bed' session, and having binged Netflix's "Never Have I Ever" earlier, definitely felt like drawing parallels between Devi and Lara Jean (and thinking abut it further also Ellie from The Half of It).

Oh, to be young and on the cusp of love. Lara Jean is very much one of those in love with love types, and much of PSISLY is on what it means to be young and figuring out relationships, with a bit about how childhood friendships inevitably change (and how we miss why, sometimes, because we're so focused on our hurts we don't see what we did to others).

There's a secondary theme of a personal moment from the first book becoming a meme that disproportionately affects LJ more than it does Peter and there's some commentary on it, but resolution feels a little handwaved (and honestly, will it ever be resolved because the internet is forever?)

My other unfiltered thought is that Lara Jean is what happens if you mush up Mary-Anne Spier's shyness with Stacey McGill's boy-craziness (yes, I also binged the Baby-Sitters Club this week...)

Jenny Han has crafted a dramatic, YA romance that will leave you breathless and potentially very frustrated.

I haven't jumped into many YA series for a long time. I kept wanting to but it just didn't happen. Why? Because I get so frustrated with cliffhangers and I've found the YA genre LOVES them, and then I don't have the remainder of the series and I begin to slowly lose my mind. I found the first two books in this series and was like "YES! I CAN NOW WATCH THE NETFLIX MOVIES", like any normal adult during quarantine.

So, we're back at it with Lara Jean and Peter. Lara Jean is a sweet girl just trying her best to be in a relationship with a popular guy who seems to be easily manipulated and controlled by his ex. His ex, Genevieve, seems to be quite the wicked girl with a bone to pick. Anywho, plot time: Someone has posted an explicit video of Lara Jean and Peter making out. Yeah, it's kind of child pornography but no one really seems to get in trouble? Don't worry about that part though, you'll find out who posted it and who knew about it by the end of the book. Onwards: Lara Jean and Peter face some difficulties in their relationship, as expected in a sequel of a romance book (and it's high school, and everyone knows there is typically trouble in paradise for high school romances). John Ambrose, a fella that Lara Jean wrote a letter to, finally gets his letter and responds to Lara Jean. He's quite the sweetheart and definitely a nice guy! This is gonna cause more trouble for the couple. Will they make it out of this relationship alive with John and Genevieve around?

My comments and notes from when I was reading:

    1. Genevieve is a mean girl with a kind of, maybe, potentially understandable back story? I understand we see the world through Lara Jean's eyes so we are going to see her as the big baddie... But she's just mean. And controlling. And manipulative.

    2. Peter and Lara Jean's relationship is a wee bit toxic. Heck, I would argue Peter is toxic. I can understand being friends with your ex, but if your girlfriend is uncomfortable with you being all touchy feely with you ex, maybe don't do that? It seems reasonable. You can totally be friends and talk to them, but if you're actively going out of your way to lie to your girlfriend or leave out crucial information... Yeah, you're kind of a jerk.

    3. Lara Jean needs to grow up a bit and learn to advocate for herself. Boys and relationships are hard, but man... Don't go for a guy who makes you feel like trash and runs to his ex. Go see a counsellor, get some therapy and learn that you are worth more than a dumb boy.

    4. John Ambrose seems like a really nice guy. I'm kinda curious if he was meant to seem like the knight in shining armour with no flaws, or if there are flaws we just didn't learn about.

    5. This book is a fantastic book! Do not take my comments on the goofiness of the drama too seriously. I honestly loved reading it but as an adult I'm going "nooooooo! Been there, done that! Noooo! Don't do that!" and enjoying every second of it. The book is fictional and is supposed to be dramatic. As long as you are looking for a soap opera like book, this is good! If you want a serious, relationship building book... Yeah, this isn't it.

    6. I really like the cover! It's very cute and classic and looks like she's yearning and thinking.

Overall, this book is a fantastic, dramatic, YA soap opera book. Lara Jean and Peter are one insanely toxic couple but man am I digging the drama. I miss YA books, I need to read more! Now, hopefully I can find the finale soon because OMG I need to know the ending...

The story brings us back to Lara Jean, but this time she is not the girl who wrote letters to the boys she fell in love with and then hid them with the intention of never sending them, nor is she the young girl who has never had a boyfriend and didn't believe she could have one... On this occasion, Lara Jean will show the most intense aspects of that first love, the doubts and insecurities experienced with a first relationship, but the story will become even more complicated when another of her former loves responds to her letter that should never have been sent. Lara Jean will have to decide whether to fight for her first love or, on the contrary, take the plunge with another boy who offers her more security.

If there's one thing I love, it's how the author gives voice to the characters, who may appeal to you more or less but are very well developed. Lara is a protagonist I can't quite connect with, mostly because her way of seeing life makes me anxious.

Peter has already won the protagonist's heart in the first installment without even trying, and in this second one, we will see him more serious, more real. The mask of the popular boy that he has always worn will slowly begin to fall, allowing us to see his more tender side. I adored Peter in the first book, and in this one, he completely won me over; I love how he defends what he wants, how he fights for his dreams, but above all, I love the loyalty he shows to his friends.

In conclusion, P.S. I Still Love You immerses us again in Lara Jean's mind to continue the story that began with To All the Boys I've Loved Before. Once again, Jenny Han presents us with a fresh and fun story that will make us laugh and feel emotional while we enjoy the youth of these characters. Without a doubt, a book I would recommend to anyone looking for a light, youthful read with touches of romance. (Translated from Spanish)

I feel that out of the two I have read so far, I like the second one more. In how Lara Jean and Peter face the problems around them, and how it is something that develops as the relationship grows, and although there were obstacles with Gen, in the sense of distrust, it is made very clear that despite everything, what Peter feels for Lara Jean is something he has not felt for any other girl.
On the other hand, John Ambrose McClaren is one of the people I enjoyed reading about, and it hurt that he was Lara Jean's second choice, as it is reflected, because he deserves more than she can offer him. In conclusion: "I volunteer as tribute."
A wonderful story, I am eagerly looking forward to reading the end of a charming and fun trilogy that made me smile several times as I turned the pages. (Translated from Spanish)

I find this book to be the best in the series. The characters were still fairly unlikeable, in my opinion, but they were more tolerable. I happened to really love John Ambrose, and I wish Lara Jean had ended up with him. This book still didn't change my opinion on Peter, but as I said before, he was more tolerable. I wouldn't consider this to be in my top ten, yet it's still not one of the worst I've read.

    Review:

In this book, Lara Jean has to confront all those feelings that come with first love and another destined in her letters, John Ambrose McClaren - it doesn’t have the same effect if I don’t write the full name - this boy responded to Lara Jean’s letter, starting to become part of the plot and creating more doubts for Lara Jean.

Lara Jean and Peter start dating seriously, reaching an agreement where they promise not to break each other's hearts, but everything complicates when Peter and Gen reconnect and when John Ambrose responds to Lara Jean's letter.

Lara Jean begins to go through quite a few situations, the insecurities of first love, the confusing feelings towards John Ambrose, and her new job at the nursing home.

Due to misunderstandings, Peter and Lara Jean break up. Lara Jean, because of her job, starts getting closer to John Ambrose, who doesn’t miss the chance to try to win Lara Jean's heart.

    Personal opinion:

I love John Ambrose McClaren and Stormi, an elderly woman that Lara Jean meets in the nursing home, with all my heart. These two characters are my life.

I think my opinion is among the unpopular ones since I prefer John over Peter, maybe not for Lara Jean, but if I were in her place, I would go with John. I felt that Peter (and Lara Jean) didn’t make good decisions, starting with not being honest with Lara Jean about Gen, and everything that came after their breakup. On the other hand, John was quite understanding and woah (I love him, sorry) with Lara Jean.

Although of course, Peter being Peter managed to win me back at the end of the book. (Translated from Spanish)

I didn't have much hope for this second part, as I thought a lot of things would be left unresolved, but I dare say it’s better than the first part. From the beginning, the plot is dynamic and something is always happening; we can see the development of several characters, sensitive themes, and reflections that truly moved me. Characters that I was excited to meet appeared, and I think they became my favorites.
Honestly, I'm not entirely convinced by the ending, how Lara Jean gives everything up for Peter; I honestly connected more with the small scenes with Ambrose. I would have liked Peter as a character to mature more, to be a bit more on par with Lara Jean, but he didn’t. He always made hasty and senseless decisions that only gave Lara Jean justification for what followed in their argument. I think that argument could have been an opportunity for Peter to mature and accept his mistakes, but no... He never took responsibility for things that harmed Lara Jean.
I hope that in this third part that follows, we can see a difference in Peter's character, as I feel that the main couple no longer fully convinces me. (Translated from Spanish)

Lara Jean represents so many fears when you enter a relationship that has already been with someone who was important, but it also reminded me that when I let go of my fears, I had the two best years of my life, and now I just have good memories of him and an occasional friendship.

    READ 30/06/2016
A second part that lived up to the first, I liked it. Honestly, I grew very fond of the Song girls, especially Lara Jean and Kitty, who is amazing.
If I have to criticize something, I could say that the first half of the book felt a bit tedious and slow, as if it lacked a bit of rhythm, but then it picks up again, and Lara Jean immerses us in her world in a way that I couldn't stop reading until the end. I liked the appearance of John and how Peter suffers a bit (heh-heh). I would have liked a bolder or more closed ending, but it was still lovely and super sweet.
