About this audiobook

Yoomi hates stinky, spicy kimchi-the pickled cabbage condiment served at Korean meals. So her brothers call her a baby and refuse to play with her. Yoomi is determined to eat kimchi. She tries to disguise it by eating it on a cookie, on pizza, and in ice cream. But that doesn't work. Then Grandma shows Yoomi how to make kimchi pancakes. This story about family, food, and a six-year-old "coming of age" has universal themes, and at the same time celebrates Korean culture. A kimchi pancake recipe and other back matter are included.

Yoomi's older siblings tease her because she doesn't like spicy kimchi and call her a baby. She's determined to prove she isn't a baby ... but the problem is, kimchi is just too spicy for her! Can her halmoni help her find a way to reconcile these two issues? This is a cute book tackling a common problem for many younger siblings -- feeling left out by older siblings but not quite having the developmental capacity to engage fully in their activities. What's nice here is how the grandmother helps make everything right so everyone can be involved and happy. This title is part of a loose series featuring Yoomi, the anthropomorphic cat who is the main character here. Although the characters are all cats, it's clear that the book is steeped in Korean culture, which makes this title a good option for libraries, classrooms, and homes looking to diversify their bookshelves and reflect as many cultures as possible.

Cute book, but the idea that it's ok to call someone a baby because they don't like the same things as you, is never challenged. Yumi learns to like kimchi, but what if she didn't? Everyone is entitled to their personal likes and dislikes.

My students enjoyed learning about kimchi and loved when the little girl tried to eat it with other foods she liked.
