Reviews for The Big Showdown
7 ratings1 review
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It reads like a Western movie playing out in front of you. You can see the small town, the Victory saloon, and the sparse empty land out there beyond the town. All the usual Western stuff is here from the
bank robbery, the duels on Main Street, the desperadoes, the swindlers, the country gal and her old pa, the wandering gunslinger, the town drunk, the bordello, and the barrio.
What really shines in this book is not just the recreation of the Old West, but the explosive bloody death-dealing violence characteristic of Mickey Spillane's novels. Against the quiet Western backdrop, the
suddenness with which blood, guts, and entrails erupt is shocking.
It's a classic motif of good versus evil, although you wonder for awhile if good guy Caleb York, the quickest gun in the west, is going to stick around or if he'll just leave the town and Willa behind as he opts for more excitement in San Diego.
