Fancy Nancy shows her readers the importance of hard work, effort, and quick thinking. Nancy makes cupcakes for her class that are eaten by her dog. Due to a lack in communication, her father brought home the necessary ingredients for a new batch of cupcakes.

Wow, these Fancy Nancy books are all so well written with themes children can relate to. I really enjoy the detailed illustrations and the rich vocabulary terms beginner readers are learning.

I love the Fancy Nancy books for many reasons, including their ability to grow the vocabularies of the very young reader, their relatable themes, including the one contained in this book about the importance of listening and following directions, and because of the hilarious illustrations that show Nancy dressed in quirky outfits, giving us all permission to dance to the beat of our own drum. In this short early reader, Nancy is so excited about the school bake sale that she doesn't pay attention in class. Again having trouble paying attention while baking cupcakes for the bake sale, Nancy forgets her mother's instructions about placing them out of reach of the family dog, and they get eaten. Thankfully, Nancy's dad brings home more ingredients, and Nancy is able to make more cupcakes, but she understands the importance of following directions and paying attention when she should. This could be used in conjunction with a lesson on following directions and the often negative consequences when we don't.

Doubly good as Nancy introduces new fancy words and learns a lesson in being a good listener.

Nancy isn't paying attention in class because all she can think about is her bake sale. Nancy followed all the directions her mother gave to her except the rule about keeping them out of reach of the dog. The dog gets a hold to the cupcakes and eat them all up, Nancy is very hurt. Nancy father goes to the store and picks up more ingredients so that she can make more cupcakes.
