Born in 1940, Annie Ernaux grew up in Normandy, studied at Rouen University, and later taught at secondary school. From 1977 to 2000, she was a professor at the Centre National d’Enseignement par Correspondance. Her books, in particular A Man’s Place and A Woman’s Story, have become contemporary classics in France. In 2022, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Para contestar a esta pregunta Ernaux construye esta obra, una obra en la que la primera persona aparece en plural o la voz narrativa se refiere a sí misma en tercera persona, para adentrar al lector a la vida de Francia, a través de una mujer nacida en el norte, cuya vida sigue porque da la casualidad que es la vida misma de la escritora; interesante y apasionante ejercicio de desdoblamiento en el que la propia vida es el hilo conductor de la historia —que sigue su marcha y a veces parece acontecer en segundo plano—, recuerda al narrador de En busca del tiempo perdido, aunque es su eje, no es el protagonista de la novela, del mundo narrado, en cambio lo es el tiempo y su fuga; acá Ernaux hace algo parecido, pero con el tiempo y la historia, su propia vida queda como un eje, un testimonio de por quien, sobre quien, pasó el tiempo, pero no es la protagonista de la obra, sino el paso mismo del tiempo.
