About this audiobook
Will dark magic claim their home?
Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father’s too kind-hearted to collect his debts. They face poverty, until Miryem hardens her own heart and takes up his work in their village. Her success creates rumours she can turn silver into gold, which attract the fairy king of winter himself. He sets her an impossible challenge—and if she fails, she’ll die. Yet if she triumphs, it may mean a fate worse than death. And in her desperate efforts to succeed, Miryem unwittingly spins a web which draws in the unhappy daughter of a lord.
Irina’s father schemes to wed her to the tsar—he will pay any price to achieve this goal. However, the dashing tsar is not what he seems. And the secret he hides threatens to consume the lands of mortals and winter alike. Torn between deadly choices, Miryem and Irina embark on a quest that will take them to the limits of sacrifice, power and love.
As with her standalone novel Uprooted, Naomi Novik has once again been influenced by classic folktales. Here, she’s woven a rich, multi-layered tapestry that is a joy to listen to.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I really struggled to finish this book! I started with the paperback, and the first third of this story is really quite good, but after that it deteriorates significantly. The changing perspectives was fine when it was only two characters, but to add new perspectives late in the story did not work, in my opinion. It made the story unnecessarily difficult to enjoy, particularly as it became so repetitive. Perhaps a narrative in third person would have been a better choice. Could only get to the end by switching to the audiobook and listening on my work commute. Two stars.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is so magical that there were times that I was enchanted by the whole story.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not a fan of Naomi, I have to say, but at least this story was more enjoyable. The narrator I didn’t like.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely brilliant! One of the best pieces of fiction writings. Loved every part of it!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/54.5 never have I ever want a prolong romance so bad with these two couples. Meanwhile it's usually really hard for me to not cringe reading fantasy purposely focused heavily on romance. The banter, the conversation, the narration are quite poetic yet so witty and funny at times. It is very atmospheric too. I went ahead without knowing much and it's the best way to do. Just wanna point out it is a multipov and everyone is in first person narration. It took awhile to pick up whose pov was I reading whenever a new pov begins within 1 chapter.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It's a Wonderful story , read nicely. I thoroughly enjoyed it
