About this audiobook
The extraordinary new novel in the New York Times-bestselling author's acclaimed series about the real Deep South-"a joy ride into the heart of darkness" (The Washington Post). She was just seventeen, a high school dropout named Milly Jones, found walking down the middle of the highway, engulfed in flames. Even in a tough Mississippi county like Tibbehah, it shatters the community, and it is up to Sheriff Quinn Colson, back on the job after a year away, and his deputy Lillie Virgil, to investigate what happened and why. Before long, however, accusations start to fly, national media and federal authorities descend, and what seemed like a senseless act of violence begins to appear like something even more disturbing-with more victims waiting in the shadows.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Great plot and writing but the language and racial slurs were hard to get past. I live in Mississippi and hate the way people describe the social atmosphere here. I’ve rarely been exposed to people with this level of racial bias except by Hollywood. I like this author’s writing style but would not buy one of his books or recommend him to others.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5best you can do for grit noir. Wanna visit the South. The low living South. Read this.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Somewhere inside of him Atkins has a really good novel. Unfortunately that's not going to happen until he gets a good editor. The Innocents is certainly better then The Redeemers but again suffers from proofreading errors and inexplicable plot jumps. This is a shame because Atkiins has created a world populated by compelling characters that don't deserve to be undone by mechanical errors. No sense in discussing the plot because it unravels fairly quickly after a good set up. Just know that it's set in Mississippi and centers on a young girls walking down the road on fire. I'd recomend this for the character and as a starting place for when that really good book comes along.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ace Atkins is a great writer, he writes in his own voice in his Quinn Colson series and writes in Robert Parker's voice in the Spenser series. Completely different styles, yet both are great writing. The Innocents is another great story (maybe my favorite so far) in the Colson series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Quinn Colson, after more than a decade as an Army Ranger, returned to his hometown, served as sheriff, tried to make things better. When the citizens of Jericho voted him out of office, he headed back to Afghanistan. Now he’s back in Jericho again, determined to fix things with both his retired Hollywood stuntman-father and his still-married high school girlfriend. When a young woman, engulfed in flames, dies, he accepts a badge from the acting sheriff, and throws himself into the investigation. Can he find the answers when old secrets and new lies muddy the truth and his enemies might be the very people knows and trusts the most?Readers will appreciate the strong sense of place, the well-drawn characters [especially the Calamity Jane-like Lillie Virgil], and the plot twists and turns that keep the suspense building and the pages turning.Highly recommended.
