- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A young woman comes home to seek approval or is she looking for justification about a decision she has made mentally, but not acted on. She is about to come against the biggest threat of her life. While not making anyone aware she is on her way home, just waiting for a cab, Leslie Rhoads finds herself ensnared in a trap that leads her down an unbelievable and unforeseeable life-altering experience.Meg is an ER nurse who is Leslie’s cousin and is shocked when a young woman near death is wheeled into the emergency room. She calls up from deep within herself the ability to hold herself together while seeing such brutality. What she later realizes is that she knows the patient, and the patient has been running away from her life in the small town of Springville for years.Leslie’s mother is a character almost beyond description and is not the most caring or compassionate mother when she first sees the scars left by the assault to her daughter; all she can see is lost money. As hours turn into days and days into weeks, the police are stumped and not sure how to proceed. In the meantime, as Leslie vainly tries to end her suffering, she is engaged with a little patient in the same hospital who suffers similar pain. Is the pain merely skin deep or does it go all the way into the soul of the victim? Will those who did such a violent act ever be brought to trial?By the way, a high school flame comes to visit Leslie just after her first surgery and she is unable to view anything other than blue eyes. Leslie believes she is “ugly” through and through and if Hunter is interested in her it is a missionary date and nothing more, but is it? For those who don’t know what missionary dating is, it is going out with someone for reasons other than relationship interest. So many characters bring this novel to life that the reader might even forget this isn’t reality! Each time I started a new chapter the climax kept building as the reader knows that the antagonist isn’t simply going to disappear. The questions beg to be asked of how will he or she be caught and brought to justice through good police work or cooking oil? Now you might want to know what I mean by police work and cooking oil, it is clue which will be understood once the novel is read!Since Leslie can no longer be a model and believes she has no other life beyond her past endeavors, as well as no high school diploma, what are her options? Where is her faith in the Lord and does she trust Him to bring about the healing of her heart along with the deepest desires of her heart?Another must read from this author! Loved it!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5'The Cutting Edge' is a great story of a model who finally "hit the Big Time", but at what cost? Was it really worth the sacrifices she would be making? She decided to go back home where she would discuss it with her father, realizing it was not only her life this decision would be affecting. She arrived late at night, deciding to spend the night in a motel rather than awaken her parents...a hotel she never made it to. The ensuing events changed her life forever! This is a dynamic story concerning vanity, self worth, unconditional love, cruelty, violence, spiritual healing, dysfunctional families,The cover is very profound and reflects much of the story. It succeeds in getting one's attention. The characters were very defined and the reader easily connected to them. However, the scene's surrounding events could have been better described. There were a few grammatical errors, as well. There were times when the "flow" of the story didn't go well and there was some repetition. The story, itself, was good and "clean" enough for YA audiences. There were also many good points made...ideal for Book Club discussions.I fluctuated between giving a three or four stars book review rating and decided on a weak Four Stars rating.I was sent this book by a publisher to read and give an honest review, of which I have given.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This story's plot line progressed quickly, a good thing considering its short length. I have been trying to steer clear of most books initially published in 70's-80's, being brought back in 2010's because their authors have meanwhile become, well known. However, I needed a new audiobook yesterday; I do like Ms. Howard's creative plots; and the CD case's front and blurb on the back were interesting, so I took a chance. This book was first published in 1995, and luckily, faired better than most in terms of technology advancements. The area it did not fair well in, was in the H/H personalities; most specifically the Hero's. I was young when Kathleen Woodiwiss made "bodice rippers" so popular. For the next 2 decades, aggressive, smothering men were the norm; so was "taking" a woman against her will (as in rape), and whom later forgives her rapist (hero) because she loved him all along, but did not want to acknowledge it. Sadly, the hero in this story had not progressed as far as he should have. If I had read this book 20 years ago, I imagine I would have forgiven the hero his deceit, his aggressive behavior and his faithlessness, as "true love" conquers all. Now, I'm sad that publishers think it's okay to re-publish those kind of story-lines. Yet another generation of women might think it's okay for men to act like neanderthals. Having said all of the above, I still did enjoy the book, but was glad it was short.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5While nothing special, this is a nice little romance to spend some time with. Brett is an enjoyable character, the plot is interesting enough, and the general quality of Howard's writing is present. It's not a full-length novel, however, and Howard does have several, better works to offer if you're on the fence about this one.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Although this book was not a new one it is one the best works of Linda Howard. It is very entertaining and interesting plot and storyline. Four-star angst after the hero had heroin arrested for embezzling. (Her throat was so sore from crying she could barely speak!) The hero was remorseful. The heroine was dignified throughout.
But I had to knock off a star for the quick forgiveness by the heroine. (Make him suffer, honey.) And for the computer genius for forgiving his girlfriend for embezzling the funds. There are plenty of Jayne Ann Krentz heroines who don't break the law who would have scooped him up - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Free Friday book from BN. It was actually a pretty good concept, but then it got religious, the characters got flat and boring and the "twist" was just of thrown in for fun it seems like.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I had this book to read for the longest time on my reading shelf. I finally had time sat down opened it and fell in love :) the guy was an ass, but I loved the whole story line the characters meshed well together. I will def. Check out more Linda howard in the future
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I read this book after finishing Double Standards by Judith McNaught, a book with a similar theme. I feel like Howard does a better job of redeeming the hero than McNaught does, plus the shorter page count makes for a less bogged-down feeling.
Brett is investigating an embezzling scheme at the company Tess works for. He decides he's interested in her and pursues her..until he realizes she's the one doing the embezzling. Then he has her arrested and intends to press charges. The only problem? Tessa hasn't been embezzling and she'd fallen so in love with Brett his betrayal devastates her.
This is definitely an angsty novel. It grabbed me by the throat right from the beginning. I hated Brett right along with Tessa. Though his high-handedness grated, I was able to move past his betrayal because he suffered greatly for what he'd done.
The end did leave me somewhat unsatisfied, however. I think another chapter would have helped resolve things completely in my mind. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A young woman comes home to seek approval or is she looking for justification about a decision she has made mentally, but not acted on.
