About this audiobook
Jennifer Weiner's talent shines like never before in this collection of short stories, following the tender, and often hilarious, progress of love and relationships over the course of a lifetime. From a teenager coming to terms with her father's disappearance to a moving portrait of men's fears about commitment and love, Weiner's stories explore those transformative moments in our every day.
We meet Marlie Davidow, home alone with her new baby late one Friday night, when she wanders onto her ex's online wedding registry and wonders what if she had wound up with the guy not taken. We stumble on Good in Bed's Bruce Guberman, liquored-up and ready for anything on the night of his best friend's bachelor party, until stealing his girlfriend's tiny rat terrier becomes more complicated than he'd planned. We find Jessica Norton listing her beloved New York City apartment in the hope of winning her broker's heart. And we follow an unlikely friendship between two very different new mothers, and the choices that bring them together -- and pull them apart.
The Guy Not Taken demonstrates Weiner's amazing ability to create characters who "feel like they could be your best friend" (Janet Maslin) and to find hope and humor, longing and love in the hidden corners of our common experiences.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Some stories I really enjoyed, some I could have skipped. I enjoy her writing and her style though. I have read some of her books and she just touches me. She understands people and is able to convey her understanding to the page and then your heart.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved this book as much as the rest of Jennifer weniers book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A collection of excellent stories by Jennifer Weiner. The best stuff of hers I've read for a long time!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I like her books, although they are somewhat all the same. Her writing intrigues me--it's chick lit, but she's a good writer--and she's been successful. Some of these stories were quite good. I listened to it, though, and some of the readers were awful.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Not as good as her other books. If you can only read one Jennifer Weiner book, read "Good in Bed"
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5By and large, I enjoy short stories, and this novel was really not an exception from that. Some of the stories were engaging, and I found myself wanting more when I finished with them because I had fallen in love so with the characters. For the most part, however, the characters in the stories were somewhat bland and left a lot to be desired. This collection rates as mediocre, if only because there weren't enough stories that left me feeling ecstatic and satisfied to justify anything higher.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5By the end of this collection, I was heartily sick of any story in which 1) somebody's daddy abandoned them; and 2) some character coped with his/her emotional pain by constant swimming. OK, Jen, we get it: your dad leaving when you were a kid really really hurt you. (As you acknowledge yourself in the notes.) You're ok now, girl. Move on. Doubtless this suffered from being read on the heels of Alice Munro's Runaway, but definitely not Weiner's best.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This diverse set of stories takes Weiner's readers beyond the single-girl in Philly formula and explores some deeper relationships. I like seeing a new side of her!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In these eleven short stories, Weiner tells stories of falling in love and falling out of love. The themes seem to be: children, divorce, the east coast, and Judaism. Although the short stories tell about the lives of different characters, many of them are experiencing similar life stages, emotions, or complications.Quote: “He’s sat across from girls like that in high school . . . laughing loudly and drinking too much and leaving with the first guy who’d whisper the word beautiful.”I liked this collection more than I thought I would- I’m not usually a huge fan of short stories, since I feel like I’m abandoning the characters just after getting to know what they’re about. This group of stories was pretty entertaining and showed a variety of lives and emotions, and how the same general situations can be interpreted differently by different people.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I liked the book. Some stories I liked more than others, but fact is: Weiner is a good author. The story Buyer's Market was so frustrating, I skipped parts of it. I could completely picture the situation in most of the stories. What I liked, is that she does not need a happy Hollywood ending for each story. That makes the stories a lot like real life. However, I still prefer her first three novels.
