FABRIC FLOWERS BLOOMING

“This scrappy quilt block is a traditional block known as Friendship Garden. Perhaps the makers exchanged fabric scraps to create the blocks? The wonderful thing about this quilt is that, as well as the blocks themselves being lovely, a beautiful secondary design appears by joining the blocks. What was once the cream background framing the colourful scraps now becomes the flowers themselves! The dark fabric of the block corners become circles, which are the centres of the flowers.

“The quilt blocks are hand sewn, but you can sew them all together by machine if you like, and the borders too. It’s a nice combination making the quilt a lovely, slow stitching project with a faster finish. I’ve used fabrics reflecting the era of the original design, but it can easily be updated to use your favourite collection or
