POPPIES

This month’s block features a bunch of red ‘common’ poppies, either facing forward or nodding to the side in a tall flowerpot. Also known as the Flanders Poppy, this flower signifies remembrance, resilience and peace and has been the symbol of Remembrance Day for over 100 years. Poppy seeds only sprout when the earth around them is disturbed, which is why so many grew on the battlefields of WWI. The distinctive red colour and delicate tissue paper-like blossom of the poppy makes this flower one of our most beloved blooms, even without the added layer of potent symbolism. Although the common poppy and its cultivars are annuals, they self-seed so freely that they naturalize in a manner that makes them perform as perennials. We have dabbled with FPP previously, but this month’s patchwork block uses this method exclusively. It’s an interesting kaleidoscopic pattern that balances well with the tender blooms above.
