Start as you mean to go on

Up at 4am for an hour’s meditation, followed by writing a few pages of the novel, then a 5K run and an ice bath before getting down to work. It’s so important to start the day right, isn’t it? If that’s the kind of thing that comes to mind when people talk about ‘developing a morning routine’, you may have been put off the whole concept! But building a routine to start your day with can help get it off to a good start – you just have to find the right component parts for you.

Not only does it have benefits in terms of headspace, calmness and productivity, but it’s time that is just for you, before the demands of the day kick in.

In my twenties and thirties, my morning routine consisted of staying in bed too late, hurriedly getting up and ready for work in the space of about 23 minutes, then racing out the door with a slice of toast in hand. Too little time to get to where I needed to go, my body stressed and my mind racing.
