Yoga, in particular, could support a flourishing microbiome through stress reduction. ‘There is considerable evidence gentle movement, such as yoga, has a positive effect on anxiety, stress, depression and mental health,’ explains brain health expert, Professor James Goodwin, director of Science and Research Impact for Brain Health Network (brain.health). ‘Studies have shown meditation activates the brain’s frontal cortex, and the brain stem releases GABA, a neurotransmitter which reduces anxiety. It also stimulates the dopamine reward system so we feel more positive and less stressed and anxious.’ Choose asanas that promote ‘agni’ (our digestive fire) to release toxins from the body and improve the oxygenated blood flow that will aid digestion.
