Around April 2019, my phone rang. After the usual bantering, my friend Wallie simply asked, “Are you available as backup gun on a buffalo hunt in November?” The answer was a nobrainer – a definite yes! Preparations started in a hurry, ranging from aeroplane tickets to export and import permits for our rifles. Wallie’s rifle of choice was a .378 Weatherby Magnum, and mine a .416 Rigby. Upon our arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, the only thing I had not done was get my “paperwork” (last will and testament) in order – a demand from my lovely wife. She would have discovered this small oversight, had I not returned after our encounters with Africa’s “Black Death”.
