Welcome to Book One of my humorous, matchmaking Scandalous Miss Brightwells series! I hope your smelling salts are on hand! This naughty Regency romp spares no details in its honest portrayal of how wicked and lively Fanny and Antoinette Brightwell made their rags-to-riches marriages and became darlings of the English aristocracy? How did it all begin? The path to true love does not run smoothly for dowerless and disgraced Miss Fanny Brightwell as she emerges from exile to hurl herself upon a London quite unprepared for her single-minded determination to find a husband to please herself. For, indeed, matchmaking mamas bent on mercurially-motivated mesalliances are the order of the day in Rake’s Honour. Not that any obstacle ever stood in the way of canny Fanny Brightwell achieving her aim. But, dear reader, while we know that romance novels and wedding bells go hand in hand, you can rest assured that every over-confident rake, every dizzy debutante, and every spurned suitor bent on revenge, will get the comeuppance they truly deserve by the end of this sizzling first-in-series. And that our bold, beautiful, brazen heroine can declare, with hand on heaving bosom, that the greatest gamble of her young life, taken to—supposedly— please her exacting mama, really paid off. What the readers say: ★★★★★ "What a splendid book! I loved every moment of it… I was delighted by their torrid and passionate meetings. And the end... made me burst out laughing. It rocks!” BookedUp Reviews: 5 Stars Reader Advisory: This steamy Regency is not for the faint-hearted as Fanny Brightwell is prepared to risk everything to save herself from a lifetime attending to Great Aunt Seraphina's chilblains or massaging lecherous Lord Slyther’s gargantuan ego – amongst other things.

Would a potential suitor be bolder if he were told the object of his desire had only six months to live? Sweet, pretty Thea Brightwell’s dull, quiet life with her crotchety aunt is about to be turned upside down by a visit to Bath and a chance encounter with handsome Mr Grayling. However, the fledgeling affair is quickly nipped in the bud by Thea's aunt who has no intention of losing her unpaid nurse and companion, while Mr Grayling regretfully acknowledges he needs to marry an heiress to restore his family's crumbling fortunes. Unbeknownst to penniless Thea, she has an unlikely champion in her well-meaning but ‘not-too-bright’ Cousin Bertram who has decided to play matchmaker. If the lack of a dowry is the only impediment to Mr Grayling making an offer of marriage, Bertram reasons the gentleman would play a riskier hand if he were told that the damsel he covets were destined for her deathbed within six months? Crotchety maiden aunts, love letters gone astray, and ‘old flames’ appearing from the woodwork lead to a most disconcerting outcome!

Eliza has her own reasons for agreeing to wed selfish George Bramley. Reasons that have nothing to do with love! If it's the only way to be reunited with the child she was forced to give up after a youthful indiscretion, Eliza will marry anyone! Mr Rufus Patmore has come to Quamby House expecting to buy a horse, not find the virtuous, beautiful wife for whom he’s been searching. For when tragedy is unexpectedly averted through an act of bravery by his host’s betrothed whom he'd thought cold and withdrawn, Rufus realises he has finally found a woman of strength and integrity. A woman worthy of the title he'll inherit and who will, he is sure, give him a lifetime of happiness. Rufus is also confident that, compared with selfish, oafish George Bramley, he's in a far better position to make Miss Eliza's dreams come true. Indeed, Eliza knows he would be. And so, in order to safeguard her secrets and to claim a future, Eliza agrees to one final, risky wager. A wager she can't afford to lose. The Wedding Wager - formerly titled Devil's Run - is Book 3 in the Scandalous Miss Brightwells series but can be read as a standalone. Author

Beverley Oakley

Beverley Oakley was seventeen when she bundled up her first her 500+ page romance and sent it to a publisher. Unfortunately drowning her heroine on the last page was apparently not in line with the expectations of romance readers so Beverley became a journalist. Twenty-six years later Beverley was delighted to receive her first publishing contract from Robert Hale (UK) for a romance in which she ensured her heroine was saved from drowning in the icy North Sea. Since 2009 Beverley has written more than thirteen historical romances, mostly set in England during the early nineteenth century. Mystery, intrigue and adventure spill from their pages and if she can pull off a thrilling race to save someone’s honour – or a worthy damsel from the noose – it’s time to celebrate with a good single malt Scotch. Beverley lives with her husband, two daughters and a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy the size of a pony opposite a picturesque nineteenth century lunatic asylum. She also writes Africa-set adventure-filled romances tarring handsome bush pilot heroes, and historical romances with less steam and more sexual tension, as Beverley Eikli.
