About this series
A young man on the run. A magical house in the woods. A mysterious shape shifter who swears to serve them both.
Dain has only the barest of plans when he runs away from his abusive brothers: travel through the cursed woods and head for Saltstone. Get a job. Live his life. The woods, however, have another idea and lead him to the Ivy House, a small building imbued with so much magic it is almost alive, and it wants a new master.
The house is charming and Dain finally feels safe. Whether that has to do with the Ivy House itself or the strange shape-shifting creature that comes with it, he's not entirely sure. The longer Dain stays and the more magic he learns, the more determined he becomes to not only live his own life, but to free his new friend to live his.
Even if it leaves Dain alone in the woods.

It should be perfectly safe, right?

Does Dain know enough magic to save a child's life? Dain has been studying hard since the run-in with his brother's friends. His mysterious familiar Ax assures him that not only will he protect Dain, but the forest itself will also, but Dain feels that it wouldn't hurt to be ready on his own. Naturally, as soon as Ax tells him that the forest will keep out unwanted visitors, a man stumbles up to his door, clutching a young child and begging for help breaking the curse that is killing her. One look at the pair and Dain leaps into action, but with no experience at all with curses and a literal deadline looming, can he learn enough to save her life?

Dain is finally feeling like he belongs in the Ivy House. He has settled into his new home and started making it his, studied enough magic to break a curse, and even feels comfortable enough to tease his new friend Ax, despite Ax's greater age and power. Life could hardly get better, in his humble opinion. But Ax's concern over Dain's brothers becomes a fact when they discover Jeremy has gathered a small band of his thuggish friends to storm Ivy House and take Dain back willing or not. Can Dain finally stand up to them and save himself, his friends, and his new life?

And Jeremy had called in a mage to beat Dain. One who had both power and experience and wants the Ivy House- and Ax's power- for himself.
