We are now in Tehilim 22,5 where Esther HaMalka is giving her request, בְּ֭ךָ בָּטְח֣וּ אֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ בָּ֝טְח֗וּ וַֽתְּפַלְּטֵֽמוֹ׃ In You our forefathers relied , they relied and they were saved. This is seemingly superfluous. The Malbim gives an unbelievable explanation. He says there are two benefits of Bitachon.. Benefit number one is that you have bitachon. In his words, “ They were reliant and they found a calmness in their soul.” That's benefit number one – that you have bitachon. That's a beautiful thought, that bitachon gives you bitachon. That’s similar to the pasuk, “H ope to Hashem, He will strengthen your heart and hope to Hashem.” The biggest gift that we have from bitachon is bitachon itself. The second benefit is that they were saved. The Maharal, in his sefer Or Hadash discusses the word וַֽתְּפַלְּטֵֽמוֹ /and they were saved. The root of that word is פלט PaLaT. In Bereshit 32, 9, Yaakov Avinu says, וְהָיָ֛ה הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הַנִּשְׁאָ֖ר לִ פְלֵיטָֽ ה׃ The other camp should be a remaining camp. Yaakov planned on splitting the two camps and the other camp would survive . Earlier, when there was a survivor from the war, it says the Palit /the one that survived came to Abraham . The Maharal says this term means Palit the person got out of the danger, like a man who got out of Germany before the Holocaust, or the man from the camp that got away after the two camps were split. He says, quite often Bitachon gets you out of the problem, by getting you away from the source of the problem. You're not suffering in the problem- Hashem pulls you out of the problem., like getting on that last boat before the the war sets in, or selling the building before the market crashes. That’s the concept of being a palit - being able to get pulled out from the situation. The Ramchal, in his sefer 515 Prayers (prayer 220) discusses the era of Esther and says, “A person cannot survive the darkness that's controlling the world, except for someone who relies on Your Oneness . And because we Jewish people rely on Your Oneness and realize that You are the One and only, we’re never in the dark. ” Even in the darkest times, what brings us light is our bitachon. This is brought down in the perek of Lamnase’ach Al Ayelet Hashachar . The Ayelet Hashachar is the miracle of Esther, and the term ‘ Ayelet Hashachar, ’ is used, says the midrash, because the darkest point of the night is really the beginning of the morning. I saw another point on this pasuk, quoted in one of the Hasidic works, in the name of the Zohar: The pasuk says, בך בטחו Becha Bat’chu/ on You they relied The word בך Becha literally means In You , but it equals 22, which refers to the 22 letters of that alphabet, which means the Torah. Similarly, it says, Nagila V’Nismecha Ba/we will be rejoicing and happy in You. Rashi says on that: בך are the 22 letters of the Torah, and that one of the sources for our bitachon comes from the fact that we learn Torah. That connection that we have through the Torah allows us to survive and gives us our bitachon. In short, this pasuk is telling us many important lessons: 1- The biggest gift of bitachon is bitachon. 2- Bitachon extracts you from the problem before it actually strikes. 3- Bitachon lights up the dark. 4- The source for that bitachon is the Torah, which is the 22 letters of the Torah. Interestingly it says, Ner Mitzvah V’Torah Or . Torah is light . So what lights up the night is our Torah learning, which gives us bitachon and gives us the ability to survive. Have a wonderful day.
