Description
Dr. Heather Millar’s work centers around the goal of improving the sexual and reproductive health of marginalized girls and young women, both locally and internationally. She is particularly interested in innovative approaches to prevention and care in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for this high-risk group, including inter-disciplinary collaboration and community partnership.
Dr. Millar is working to train others on how to be trauma informed care providers. Pap smears, pelvic exams, IUD insertions, surgeries, and birthing children are all complex moments for a patient. Ensuring the patient's background is recognized is step 1 but working to enhance the experience for those that feel uncomfortable during these times should be essential. We cover it all in this episode! We even cover tips on how you can have the best experience even if your doctor isn’t trauma informed.
Dr. Millar Shares:
Tell us about your story and how you came to find this work of trauma informed care within Obstetrics
Why is it important to have a trauma informed care team?
How common are trauma informed ObGyns? What kind of work do we have to do to get there?
Do you have any examples of your work and how it has impacted your patients? (story time!)
What questions can women ask when trying to find a trauma informed practitioner?
