The New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays thanks to the heroics of a rookie. This time, Austin Wells broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the ninth with a two-run home run off Jordan Romano to give the Yankees a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. After Clay Holmes shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, the Yankees won the game 2-0. There were the typical Yankees issues, like the offense being silent for most of the game against Kevin Gausman—they were held hitless for five innings before Estevan Florial finally got a hit. On the flip side, while not as strong as he was the last time out against the Jays, Michael King held them to one hit in six innings of work. We discussed his outing. The Yankees also had a chance to score in the seventh inning but kept Giancarlo Stanton on the bases after he hit a double, and he was thrown out at home after not scoring on a single in the previous at-bat. We discuss that mystifying decision and wonder why Boone didn’t bring someone in to pinch run for him. Then we talk about an article in The Athletic (linked below) about the robot umps. We discuss the system and wonder if it could actually work in MLB and also wonder if the umps would even go for it. And finally, we preview the Gerrit Cole/Jose Berríos matchup. This will be Cole’s last start of 2023, and we wax poetically about the season he’s had.
