Deborah Vance, played so brilliantly by the great Jean Smart, ends this first episode bloodied, clawing her way over whatever obstacles she faces. Now an underdog, Deborah is leaving Las Vegas, the city she once ruled, to hit the road and reinvent herself with Ava (precariously) by her side. There will be blood, as the title of this first episode foretells, but there is also going to be vulnerability and humor and self-discovery. The amazingly funny supporting cast is all back to add laughs, as well as touching emotional beats to this rich story.The writing team of Lucia Aniello (who also directs this episode), Paul Downs, and Jen Statsky are still at the top of their game and we can’t wait to see where they take us this season.
