In a unanimous decision, Colorado has opted to rejoin the Big 12 conference starting from the 2024-25 athletic season. The University of Colorado Board of Regents made this resolution, intending to move the Buffaloes from the Pac-12, where they have been since 2011, back to the conference they co-founded in 1996. The Big 12 university presidents had also voted unanimously to approve Colorado's membership, contingent on a formal application.

To proceed with the switch, the next steps for CU involve submitting two official letters. One letter will notify the Pac-12 of their withdrawal from the league, effective July 1, 2024, and the other will request admission to the Big 12 on the same date.

Colorado's decision was carefully considered, with the university administration, including Chancellor Philip DiStefano and Athletic Director Rick George, believing that the move to the Big 12 will provide greater stability, resources, and exposure necessary for long-term success in an ever-changing college athletics landscape. They emphasized the Big 12's broad national reach spanning three time zones and shared creative vision for the future, which they feel align well with CU Boulder's goals, students, faculty, and alumni.
