The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the debut 8th study session on Mário Filho's 1947 The Black Man in Brazilian Soccer, translated to English by Jack A. Draper III. Brazilian football (soccer) legend Pelé died near the end of 2022 at the age of 82. His transition along with the disgraceful hooliganism displayed when former President Jair Bolsonaro lost the presidency to Lula da Silva, motivated us to read this book. Most non-white people have not traveled to South America or studied Brazil, this seems like a great time to do some south-of-the-equator learning. Last week, we continued reading the chapter on the so called revolution of the black soccer player. But Filho writes more of the same. Black and non-white players being mistreated, restricted and definitely kept away from White girls. In a book that features practically no female characters, we heard about Balbina, a black female mammy figure with fat, black arms like chocolate candy, who made the best porridge imaginable for her manly, White footballers. Apparently, "aunt jemima" depictions of black females are beloved in early 20th century South America the same as current day US flapjack-eaters.
