Description
The role or behavior that, according to existing cultural norms, is appropriate for a given gender. "The emphasis on maintaining conventional gender roles"
Gender role ideology falls into three types: traditional, transitional, and egalitarian.
The first reflects the expected distinctions in responsibilities for men and women: males should be responsible for providing for their families, so they are more likely to be allocated roles linked to employment; women should be, so they are more likely to be, assigned roles related to domestic duties.
According to egalitarian viewpoints, roles shouldn't be divided based on gender. At work and at home, men and women may play equal roles.
Transitional perceptions straddle the line between egalitarian ideals and traditional role segregation.
How do gender roles affect society?
Women and girls frequently have to limit their responsibilities to those of mothers, wives, and caregivers. Gender norms place girls in caretaking roles, which causes gender inequity in the division of household roles. As a result of the limited outside options, this also leads to a lack of education.
How do gender roles affect child development?
Gender norms instruct girls to be pleasant and submissive and to care about their beauty while teaching boys to suppress their feelings. It is not surprising that we do not have enough women in STEM careers (8% of apprentices are women) or a strong representation of men in the care sector. These factors, along with a lack of role models and discriminatory attitudes, are to blame.
Gender stereotypes can influence all aspects of life, not just career choices. They can lead to poor mental health in young people, higher rates of male suicide, low self-esteem in girls, problems with body image (1 in 5 14-year-olds self-harm), and they can enable a culture of toxic masculinity and violence against women
